What is an AV Audio Video Signal Switcher?

• AV receivers or audio-video receivers are one of the many consumer electronics components typically found within a home theatre system. Their primary purpose is to amplify sound from a multitude of possible audio sources as well as route video signals to your TV from various sources. The user may program and configure a unit to take inputs from devices such as DVD players, VCRs etc. and easily select which source he or she wants to route to his TV and have sound output for.

Usage:

• The term receiver originally referred to a component which included a tuner, a pre-amplifier and a power amplifier. These were generally called stereo receivers. The built in tuner in these devices gave them the name receivers
• As home entertainment options expanded, so did the role of the receiver. The ability to handle a variety of digital audio signals was added. More amplifiers were added for surround sound playback. Video switching was added to simplify switching. Within the last few years, video processing has been added to many receivers

Learning an AV Switch Box:

Choosing:

• The first step in properly setting up an A/V switchbox is to figure out what types of inputs you need. Some A/V switchboxes only have composite video and S-Video inputs and so are good for standard cable boxes, VHS players and video games. However, for high definition TV, you want an A/V switchbox that accommodates either component video or HDMI cabling. Many newer video games, such as PlayStation 3, as well as Blu-ray DVD players, have HDMI outputs

Configuring:

• Whether you have a standard A/V switchbox or a high-definition one, the first step is to run cables from the box to an input on your TV. This input will be the input your TV is always turned to. If you are using a standard A/V switchbox, you will need to run a composite or S-Video cable from the box to the TV and a pair of RCA audio cables as well. If you have an HDMI box, one HDMI cable can be connected, since HDMI carries both video and audio. If you are using a component video box, run a set of component video cables (red, green and blue) and a pair of RCA audio cables from the output of the switchbox to the input of the TV
• Finish the setup by running the appropriate sets of cables from your video sources (VHS, video game, HD cable or satellite box and DVD player) to the inputs on the switchbox

Operating:

• Power on the switchbox and the TV. Turn the TV to the input you ran the cables from the box to Video 1 on your TV. To select from different sources, simply push the button on the front of the A/V switchbox. If you haven't already, label the inputs with a label maker so that you know which button goes to which video source. If video or audio does not change when you push a button, you have run the cables incorrectly. Check the back of the box to make sure you have configured it correctly
