Baby Bath Safety:

Bath time is a fun time in which baby and caregiver bond. It is also a time that can be potentially dangerous to your baby. Inattention to little details can spell tragedy in a few seconds. Taking a few precautions will ensure that bath time for your baby is an enjoyable time that does not turn into a heartbreaking situation.

• Never Leave
• Children can drown within seconds. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, "About two-thirds of drowning deaths (in children) in the home, not including swimming pools, occur in bathtubs." Less than two inches of water are needed for a baby to drown. Never leave your baby alone, even if you think she is propped up properly. Create a checklist that you reference as you prepare for bath time. Have all materials needed for the bath within easy reach of your hands during the bath. Let the phone ring while you are bathing your baby. If you have to answer the door, take your baby with you.

• Water Temperature
• Water temperature that is 140 degrees Fahrenheit can leave your baby with third-degree burns. Water temperature should not exceed 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Set the thermostat in your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Purchase a bath thermometer to make sure the bath water is not too hot. Use your elbow or wrist to test the water temperature if you do not have a thermometer.
• Bath Seats
• Bath seats are seats that your baby can either sit or recline in while you bathe her. Never lift the bath seat while the baby is in it. Doing so may cause you to drop him. Check to see if the bottom of the tub is clean and has no remnants of residue before placing the bath seat in it. Test the suction cups and make sure they adhere to the tub before you place the baby in the bath seat. Do not leave your child alone, even if he is in a bath seat.

However making bath time a fun and productive activity is really not all that hard.

• Where?
• When they're little you can actually give your baby a bath in the kitchen sink. If you are not digging the thought of baby poop the same place you do your dishes, buy a commercially available baby tub. The key is that you only need an inch or so of water. We're not trying to float the U.S.S. Indianapolis here.
• Timing!
• Make bath time an evening event because it will help your little one wind down for a night of (hopefully) sleep. Most importantly make bath time part of a normal schedule. Babies thrive on schedules so if possible make bath time the same time each night. The more you adhere to this schedule the less fussiness you will be dealing with.

• Temperature!
• Warm the room up so it's nice and toasty. The last thing you want is to punctuate a nice tranquil bath experience with a blast of cold air. If you are too warm, it's probably just right. Think of "that summer in Cancun" and you will have the right idea.
• The water should be as close to body temperature as possible. Always test the temperature before you put your baby in the tub. You can purchase a cute bath thermometer that looks like a frog, or you can do the Dad thing, and just use the thermometer you use for your baby. They all read temperature so it really doesn't matter. If you don't have a thermometer handy don't worry about it. Just put your wrist into the water and see how it feels. It should feel neutral on your skin; not warm and not cool. Baby's skin is much for sensitive than ours, so "hot tub" is not what you are shooting for.
• Technique!
• Start on the top and work your way down with a soft washcloth (unless you actually want poop on your baby's head). Wash behind the ears, and in all the folds of skin around the neck, arms, and legs. As you will soon learn, babies are awesome lint traps. Don't be surprised if you find Jimmy Hoffa in there one night. When they are first born, forget the soap. Just some water and elbow grease is all you need. As they get older, stick to mild soaps made especially for baby skin. Just a dab is all you'll need.
• Towel!
• This is where you get to invoke those cool hooded towels that look like farm animals. Babies, like adults, loose most of their heat through their head. Cover it up and bundle them tight. As you prepare to dress them for bed, forget the baby powder. It's a mess and bad for baby's lungs. If your baby has dry skin, apply a small amount of baby specific lotion.
