How to Make a Baby Bedding Set

- A few DIY projects turn any fabric into a baby bedding set.
Commercial baby bedding sets are often expensive and when you purchase them, you are confined to available patterns and styles. Sewing your own crib bumper, crib sheets and receiving blankets gives you control over size, fabric choices and design. None of these projects demands more than basic sewing skills and all can be whipped up in a weekend.
Instructions
1.Bumper Pad- Cut the fabric into 10-inch-wide strips. Sew the pieces of fabric together with a 1/8-inch seam to make two 160-inch long and 10-inch wide strips. One will be the front of the bumper and one the back. Do the same with the batting. To sew the batting, butt the ends
- Stack the fabric and batting strips. Start with one fabric strip with it's brighter side facing down. Top with the batting and then the second fabric strip with it's bright side facing up. Pin around all sides of the stack. Sew across the top and bottom, shorter edges with a sewing machine, using a 1/4-inch seam and making sure to catch both layers of fabric and the batting.
- Measure 25 1/5 inches down from one shorter edge and sew a vertical line across all three layers. Sew another line 25 1/2 inches from the first. Continue with a third line 27 1/2 inches from the second. Repeat this sequence of three vertical sewn lines.
- Pin binding tape around all edges of the bumper and sew in place. Start with the two long edges and finish with the two short edges. Cut sixteen 18-inch lengths from the excess binding tape. Fold each in half width-wise and press that seam. These are the ties to secure the bumper to the crib.
- Sew ties along both long edges of the bumper at both ends and at each vertical sewn line. To use the bumper, set it in the crib and tie each of the ties around the crib side slats.
2.Crib Sheet
- Cut the fabric to 68-by-45-inches. Cut an 8-inch square from each corner of the fabric.
- Lay the fabric with it's right, or brighter, side facing up. Bring the 8-inch edges left from cutting the square from one corner and pin. The brighter sides of the fabric should be together with the seam toward the duller side. Repeat on all four corners and sew these seams with a 1/4-inch seam. The result should be a fitted-sheet shape with no elastic at the corners.
- Cut the elastic into four 9-inch pieces. Pin the center of one piece of elastic to the center seam of the dull side of one corner of the sheet. Start sewing in the center of the elastic toward one end, pulling the elastic as you go. Sew from the center to the other end in the same manner. Repeat on all four corners. Once sewn, the elastic will pull the sheet corners in and form a fitted sheet.
3.Receiving Blanket
- Wash and dry the fabric to preshrink. Press the fabric prior to cutting. Cut the front and back fabrics to 43-inches square.
- Pin rick-rack around the perimeter 1-inch from the edges of the right, or brighter, side of the front fabric. Use your sewing machine to sew the rick-rack in place by sewing down the center of the trim. Use a long, straight stitch and do not back stitch at either end, as you'll be pulling the thread out eventually.
- Top the front fabric with the back fabric. The fabrics right sides should be facing each other. Pin the sides together and turn the whole thing over so you can see the basting stitches. Sew around the blanket right over the basting stitches with a smaller straight stitch. Leave a 10-inch opening for turning.
- Turn the blanket through the hole and press. Fold the raw edges of the turning hole in and press this as well. Sew all the way around the perimeter of the blanket as close to the edge as possible, closing the turning hole as you go.
Tips & Warnings

- Be careful of using crib bumper pads as the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends not having any bumpers or pillows in the bed with the baby, as they can pose a safety issue.
