How to Sew a Baby Hat:
- Use the diagram to draw your pattern on paper. The hat should be 7 inches wide with a length of 5 inches or more to the rounded top of the hat. You can make the rabbit ears as long as you wish. Cut the pattern out
- Fold your knit fabric in two. Place the pattern on the fabric and pin both together. Do not place the pattern on the fold. Cut two pieces
- Take the pins out and remove the pattern from the cut pieces. Place the pieces together, right sides facing, and pin
- Tack the pieces and remove the pins. Sew the sides, top and ears of the hat with a permanent stitch, using a sewing machine or a needle and thread. Remove the temporary tacking stitches
- Fold the hem of the hat up about ½ inch and then fold another ½ inch. Pin the folds down and then tack. Take the pins out and then sew the hem with a permanent stitch
- Cut off any loose threads and then turn the finished hat right side out
How to Knit Baby Hats:
- Figure out the circumference of the child's head. If possible, measure it. Generally, premature babies are 12 inches in circumference, small newborns are 13 inches in circumference, and large newborns are 14 inches in circumference, while a 1 year old baby has an average head circumference of 17 inches
- Cast on using your yarn and needles. Make a slipknot around one needle, and keep making backwards loops. Continue looping until you have slightly less than the approximate measurement, in inches, of the hat you've chosen to make when the stitches are slightly stretched on the needle
- Begin to knit by inserting needle 1 through the back of the first loop on needle 2. Wrap the yarn counter clockwise around needle 1, creating a new loop. Keep this new loop on needle 1 using tension, and slide needle 1 out from beneath the old loop. Slide the old loop off of needle 2, letting it fall. Do not transfer it to needle 1
- Continue the motions of Step 3 until you reach the end of a row. Turn needle 1 around, and begin the process again
- Continue knitting each row until the hat is the approximate height needed to cover the baby's head. This should be about 5 inches
- Cut the thread, leaving a long tail. Thread this tail of yarn through a tapestry needle
- Thread the tapestry needle and yarn through the stitches at the top of the hat. Pull tightly on the threaded needle, and pull the stitches off of the knitting needle
- Sew a seam down the back of the hat, and secure any loose yarn ends with the tapestry needle

02-05-2011- Other Thoughts: This is the best baby hat. It's not all fancy and cute looking like other hats, but it does the best job in staying on your child's head and keeping the sun off of their face. I love that you can tighten the hat to fit their head and that you can wash it. Hands down, best hat! Saved us while we were on the beach especially!

03-05-2011- Other Thoughts: This is a great hat. It is very wide and shades her entire face and even most of her shoulders. I but this on her when we were in the pool in her floaty seat and she was almost entirely shaded. Baby is 5 months old & 18 lbs, I got the larger size and it fit her fine with just adjusting the cord.

04-22-2011- Other Thoughts: I purchased this hat for my 1 yr. old when we traveled to Colorado. It was perfect with the chin ties and head adjustment. It kept her pretty little face, head, and neck from sun burning. I would absolutely recommend this to any parent.

02-24-2011- Other Thoughts: We needed a hat to protect our son from the blistering sun during the summer months and Santa Ana days. The wide brim protected no only his head but his face as well. He did not get any sunburns and was able to look around comfortably and not close his eyes.
