- It's simple to "wrap" your Christmas presents by popping them into gift bags, but commercial gift bags often can be as expensive as the gifts themselves. Decorating your own gift bags is a fun craft that will make your presents even more personalized; all it takes is a few basic crafts supplies and your imagination. Start with plain paper bags of any size and spend an evening creating these cute custom-made gift bags for Christmas
Doily Gift Bag
- Cut one doily down into a 2- to 3-inch medallion. Cut another apart into 1-inch medallions.
- Unfold the bag and arrange one whole doily, the large medallion and the smaller medallions until they form a pleasing pattern. Place one or two of the doilies so that they fold around an edge of the bag
- Glue the doilies in place. Let dry thoroughly before use
Christmas Tree Bag
- Fold the sides of the bag back at an angle (starting a few inches up from the bottom) so that the bag forms a long triangle with the peak at the top. Press the fold lines into sharp creases. Unfold the bag
- Make freehand "swags" of glue from side to side on the paper between the creases. Cover the glue swags with glitter. Shake off the excess glitter and let the glue dry thoroughly
- Glue on hole-punch circle "ornaments." Let glue dry completely. Put the gift in the bag and fold the edges back along the creases; staple closed. Put a star sticker at the peak of the gift bag and overlap it with an identical sticker on the other side
Tips & Warnings
- Mix different patterns and sizes of doilies for different looks
- Experiment with different supplies for ornaments on your "tree" bag. Try buttons, stickers, fake gems or foam shapes
- Open the bags before applying paint or glue to make sure the sides aren't stuck together. Slip a piece of newspaper inside the bag before painting or gluing to avoid sealing it shut if the paper seems thin or porous
Other ideas for Decorating Christmas Gift Bag:
- Use the snowflake stamps and white ink pad to create a stamped background on the front of all the bags. Stamp the snowflake images onto the bag repeatedly in any pattern you like. Set the bag aside to dry. The white ink may take longer to dry than a dark ink would because the ink sits on top of the paper to make it visible
- Fold the white piece of printer paper in half hot dog bun style and cut a Christmas tree like you did in elementary school. You can make the tree a simple triangle or you can make the layered look
- Trace the tree pattern onto the green card stock. You will need one Christmas tree for each bag. Cut all the trees out. A simple triangle tree will be easiest if you have a lot of gift bags to make
- Decorate each tree with ornament stickers. Ornament stickers can be found at craft stores around Christmas time and on clearance right after Christmas if you want to think ahead for next year
- Tie a ribbon in a small bow. To get the best shaped bow make two loops with the ribbon and tie the loops in a knot. This technique will give you the traditional bow shape rather than the bow shape you get when you tie your shoelaces
- Attach a bow to the top of each tree with a foam dot. Cut foam dots in half if they are too big to fit behind the knot of the bow
- Attach each Christmas tree to the front of a gift bag with foam do
