How to Remove Burn Marks on Rugs:
If a cigarette or candle burn on your carpet has you steaming, here's a solution that will cool you off. While there's no way to make your carpet look brand-new, you can remove and replace the singed fibers so that you're the only one who'll know the marks were there.- Gently rub the burned area with lightweight sandpaper or steel wool to remove the melted fibers.
- Brush or vacuum the burned area to remove any ashes or loose singed fiber. If the burn marks are gone, you can stop here. If you can still see the burn, you'll need to remove and replace that area of carpeting (steps 3 through 8).
- Carefully cut out the damaged area with a carpet knife or a utility knife (see A), extending your cut at least 2 inches (5 cm) beyond the burn edges. Make sure you cut only the carpet backing--not your floor beneath.
- Place the cutout on a piece of paper. Trace with a pencil and cut out the pattern.
- Place your template on a carpet remnant. Or you can use carpet from an inconspicuous area, such as the back of a closet. Cut and remove the replacement carpet patch.
- Using a glue gun, cover the back side of the replacement carpet with carpet glue and set the piece in place. Rim the edges with glue to prevent the patch from being dislodged during routine cleaning or use.
- Blend and seal the seams by rolling over the patched area with a carpet tractor (see B).
- Allow the carpet to dry thoroughly before foot traffic resumes.
Tips & Warnings:
- You can find carpet glue and a carpet tractor at most hardware or home supply stores.
- If the burns don't go all the way down to the carpet backing or you're leery about cutting and pasting, you can trim the fibers from the burn hole and glue in replacement fibers. Clip new fibers from a fresh patch of carpet and glue them
How to Choose a Rug for Any Room?
- Choose what size rug you want. When deciding this, you may want to take into consideration how you want the room to feel. A big rug in a big room can give the room a more formal feel. A rug that hugs the walls of a bedroom gives the room a warmer, snugger feel.
- Select the shape of the rug. Shape is very important because it has a big impact. A free-form rug can add excitement to a room that may feel too stuffy. Round, circular rugs are unique and can soften the angles of a more conventional room. You can also have the shape of a rug copy the shape of the piece of furniture sitting on top of it. An example of this is a round rug under a round coffee table or a large rectangular rug under a dining room table.
- Decide what color you want your rug to be. Color can be extremely powerful. It can invoke different moods. Examples of this would be how darker rugs give rooms a cozier feel or how bold colored rugs can give rooms a more playful feel. Color can be chosen for practical reasons as well. You may want to use darker tones in rooms that will be getting more foot traffic. If you want to make a room seem larger, lighter tones are the way to go. And remember that not everything in the room needs to match. Look at the flooring, paint color, furniture and other accessories in the room and try to get a color that blends with these. You can also get a rug with varying tones that will pick up color already in the room.
- Pick the type of pattern you want for your rug. Patterns can bring visual interest to a room by adding depth and perception. Graphic rugs can bring darker rooms to life. Patterns also have the great function of being more forgiving to heavy foot traffic. The more pattern a rug has, usually the lower maintenance it is. And don't forget that you can have more than one pattern in a room. There just needs to be a shared motif or color.
- Choose what type of weave you want your rug to have. The type of weave or texture a rug has, along with its color, sets the personality of a room. When deciding on the type of weave you want, take into consideration where the rug will be in your home and how much use it will be getting. You may end up choosing one depending on how hard or easy it is to clean. Decide on its purpose and find out if it's going to be durable or if you are just going to use it for luxury purposes.

The old mat was beyond cleaning, so it was time for a fresh one. <br/> <br/>This Cotton Bathroom Mat is just what I wanted. A classic, thick, non-slip mat from a manufacturer I've trusted for years, embossed with a subtle wave pattern. Yes, the price is higher than the mats imported from China, but it just isn't worth it to save a couple of dollars. Five stars for a great product.

05-31-2011- Other Thoughts: This is a GREAT Cotton Bathroom Mat. It is secure and does not slide around in the tub. We had purchased a soft and very comfortable bath mat but when stepping in or out the suction cups woud allow the mat to slide around. We fount it to be too unsafe.

05-16-2011- Other Thoughts: Safe enough that I trust my 9 months pregnant wife to shower with it. <br/>This mat does not shift or move like some mats do. It has a nice cushioned texture your feet sink into, kind of like walking barefoot in grass. You just feel safe on it.
