How to Charge a NI-MH Battery?
- Understand the efficacy of charging NI-MH batteries. The coulometric charge potential for NI-MH batteries averages just below 70 percent. This means that, on average, one NIMH battery requires 150 amp hours to produce 100 amp hours of energy.
- Pick a charger. The ultra fast AA/AAA battery charger is manufactured by high capacity, has a 4- to 6-hour charge time and can charge up to four batteries at a time. The 8- to 10-hour AA/AAA battery charger is manufactured by duracell and charges up to two batteries at a time
- Prepare the charge. Plug in the charger, then select the charging cycle; options can vary from "fast charging cycle" to "slow charging cycle" (see the manufacturer's instructions). Place the appropriate number of NI-MH batteries into the charger and start the start timer. Finish by setting the safety timer backup termination feature, if applicable. Allow NI-MH batteries to charge completely before removing
- Monitor the charge. The voltage in NI-MH batteries will dip slightly when they are fully charged. An internal sensor will then signal a drop in voltage and end the charging. If this does not occur, or the device is faulty, monitor and check the battery for overheating at the end of the specified charge time. For example, when using the 8- to 10-Hour AA/AAA battery charger, be sure the termination technique has stopped all charging at the 8-hour mark or between 8 and 10 hours. Avoid allowing the battery to charge beyond this period
How to Choose a Battery for an RC Car?

- Choose the battery type that's most appropriate for your RC car. There are four types to choose from: NI-CD (Nickel-Cadmium), NI-MH (Nickel-Metal-Hydride), Li-ion (Lithium-Ion) and Li-Poly (Lithium-Polymer). NICD batteries are difficult to dispose of because of the cadmium, and over time lose the ability to maintain a complete charge, but can easily attain a peak charge, increasing efficiency. NI-MH batteries can be charged to higher capacities than NI-CD batteries without losing the ability for maximized charging, though they can be damaged when overcharged. They also lack the toxic materials that make other batteries difficult to dispose of. Li-ion batteries can hold twice the charge of NI-CD batteries and can adjust the rate of discharge of energy while also avoiding possible overcharges, but the added efficiency comes with greater cost. Li-Poly batteries are even more powerful than Li-ion batteries with twice the power, though overcharging them can cause them to burst into flames. They are also lighter than other battery types
- Choose the capacity you wish to use for your car. The capacity of battery packs is listed with a milliamp-hour rating. The higher the milliamp rating, the greater the capacity, which means the longer, the battery will provide power before requiring recharging
- Examine the battery pack to determine if the batteries are matched or not. Matched battery packs contain individual batteries that are rated to discharge equally. With all the cells in a battery pack discharging equally, the efficiency of the pack on the whole is improved. Choose a matched pack, especially when using NI-CD batteries
