How to Wash a Cotton Coverlet

- Protect the color of your coverlet with gentle washing.
The word coverlet originated from middle English and meant, literally, "to cover the bed." Today coverlets go over the comforter to protect against dust, dirty feet and animal hair. The thinness of the coverlet makes washing it easier than washing your comforter. Great variety exists among cotton coverlets, including different textures and weaves. Sateen, pima and Egyptian cotton are examples of specific types of cotton.
Instructions- Load your coverlet into the washing machine. Prevent tangling by bunching the coverlet along one side instead of wrapping it around the agitator. Wash with similar colors.
- Pour the detergent in the designated slot or directly over the coverlet. Do not use bleach. The delicate cotton of many coverlets will prematurely break down under such harsh chemicals.
- Set the washer on gentle cycle and use cold water for both washing and rinsing. Cotton is susceptible to shrinking and mi-shaping under hot water.
- Dry the coverlet on delicate tumble with low heat. Remove the coverlet from the dryer while still damp to avoid shrinking.
- Lay the coverlet flat on your bed or hang over the back of your couch. Do not line dry, which can stretch and mis-shape the cotton.
Tips & Warnings

- Always consult the care tag directions before washing your coverlet at home. Certain coverlets recommend dry cleaning only.
Types of Bedspreads
Quilts, bedspreads, comforters---you may think all bed covering are the same, but in reality, bedspreads, unlike the other two, are meant to reach or almost touch the floor. Frequently used in hotel rooms, bedspreads are usually thinner than other types of bed covering and typically feature a stitched pattern.
Chenille- Chenille bedspreads are soft and warm, and ideal for snuggling up under. Chenille bedspreads gained popularity in the late 1800s when a woman from Dalton, Georgia created the stitch to make the tufted confections. Chenille bedspreads often feature intricate geometric or flowery designs, and the historic ones typically have a pale main color. Although chenille bedspreads were often made of polyester after the 1950s, you can find cotton ones created like the historic ones at many retailers today.
Quilted
- Quilted bedspreads feature stitched patterns on the top of the fabric, and the stitches may even help keep the fabric layers of the bedspread together. Quilted bedspreads are usually larger than a regular quilt and often create a squarelike box shape at the bottom to cover the end of the bed. Quilted bedspreads can feature only one fabric with stitching on top or multiple fabrics stitched together.
Reversible
- A reversible bedspread allows you to change the look of your bedroom easily. Reversible bedspreads feature high-quality fabric on both sides of the bedspread, so you can turn it over whenever you want to create a different look. You can purchase a reversible bedspread with one or both sides quilted from most retailers, or stick to a basic bedspread featuring little or no quilting.

04-18-2011- Other Thoughts: I bought the king size as our bed is queen size but has a very deep mattress and I wanted to cover the bed base. Unfortunately the king size was too large, but the bedspread is lovely and I have re-ordered in the queen size.
