How to Choose Binoculars?

    • Define your principal use, e.g., birdwatching, big game hunting, boating, watching sporting events, etc. You may find that your needs vary enough to require two or more binoculars, or that one can serve for "general purpose" use

    10X Binoculars Telescope

    • Understand the nomenclature. The basics are expressed by what appears to be a mathematical formula, for example "8x32", but this is not a multiplication, it is a non-mathematical shorthand indicating that the binoculars magnify the target image eight times (8x), and that the objective (front) lens is 32 millimeters in diameter. Binoculars, spotting scopes, rifle scopes, and similar small optics use metric measurements, even in the U.S.A. 7x-10x is the magnification range useful for most purposes. Other terms you should understand are "coating" which refers to various proprietary chemical depositions on the lens surfaces intended to minimize light flare and reflection on the lens surfaces, and to enhance transmission of light through the lens glass. Manufacturers use various trade names for their coatings, but they all attempt to accomplish the same thing. "Fogproof" means that the interior of the lens assembly has been purged of moisture-containing air, and filled with inert nitrogen that won't condense inside the lens assemblies (called "barrels" in binoculars) and literally "fog" the lenses on the inside. "Waterproof" means what it says, that the binoculars can survive at least some degree of immersion
    • "Water resistant" is more vague, probably meaning that the binocs can stand a slight splashing or exposure to light rain, but it's an indication that even the manufacturer is hedging, and not claiming that the glasses are genuinely waterproof

    21mm Binoculars Telescope

    • Understand the difference between "porro prism" and "roof prism" design. The two designs route incoming light through two different paths --- porro prism design is recognizable by the presence of two 90 degree "doglegs" in each barrel. It is typically a cheaper manufacturing method, and commonly seen in relatively inexpensive, lower performance glasses. It results in an end product that is comparatively wide and bulky, and usually heavier, too, than "roof prism" glasses of identical magnification and objective lens size. Roof prism design stacks all the lenses and prisms in straight line, resulting in a more compact design that can fold up into a somewhat smaller package, and is generally indicative of higher quality, and of course, more expensive instruments. There are plenty of exceptions to these generalizations, but these are the rule. "Center focus" designs permit focusing both lenses simultaneously, an extremely desirable feature, whereas "individual focus" lenses require fiddling with both lenses separately to get them both in equal focus, an extremely undesirable trait for most uses

    Compact Binoculars Telescope

    • Larger diameter objective lenses let in more light than smaller lenses, desirable for enhancing low-light-level performance, and increasing "exit pupil" size (more on this later), but increase in weight as size increases. Weight increases with increasing magnification, too. Also, "field of view", the area visible through the lenses (expressed as "x" many feet or meters, usually at 100 yards or meters, e.g., 60 feet at 100 yards, 20M/100M, or the like) varies with both objective lens diameter and magnification

Compact Super Image Quality 10X 21mm Binoculars Telescope

    • Let's look at some typical uses, and the considerations that you'll want to take into account. Birdwatchers generally speaking want a few key traits: reasonable magnification, wide field of view to make tracking small, fast moving targets easy, close-focusing capability, and comparatively light weight and compact size for carrying on a neck strap for long periods, and weather resistance. So, for this purpose, we probably want about 8x magnification, 32mm objective lens, roof prism lenses that are lightweight and compact and easily tucked inside a windbreaker or etc. A sports fan watching the action in a well-lit stadium, from a steady, stationary position probably doesn't care about weight or bulk, and won't be viewing except intermittently, so need not be worried about defect-free collimation that is important to hunters and others that spend hours behind their binocs. The sports fan can probably get by just fine with inexpensive porro prism glasses in the 7-8x range, and needn't worry much about waterproofing, high-end coatings, and other esoterica that he won't test. Big game hunters who both seek and assess trophy specimens at long range should be looking at high-end glasses in the 10x40 range, or slightly larger, for long distance capability, low light level performance, and low glare/flare coatings. Typically, these glasses may be both handheld, or used with a ballhead tripod and a stool or similar solid perch, minimizing induced image motion. Weatherproof assemblies are important, and shock resistance as well. Most of the high-end European optics manufacturers offering glass at these performance levels will offer roof-prism glass with all the bells and whistles, with a price tag to match
    • Some other considerations include: "Eye relief" and "eyecups" --- most binoculars have "eyecups" on the ocular (rear) lens, which serve as standoffs to position the viewer's eye at the right distance behind the ocular lens to bring the target image into focus. Eyeglass and sunglass wearers will want "eyecups" that fold down, screw down, telescope, or otherwise get out of the way to foreshorten the distance between the eyeglass lens and the ocular lens. Some designs are better than others --try before you buy. People with especially narrow-set eyes may have a problem with inadequately narrow "interpupillary distance" adjustment, i.e., the binocs barrels cannot be folded sufficiently close to bring the "exit pupil" (again, more later) in line with your own eyes, a trait worth checking before making an expensive investment

    10X Binoculars Telescope

    • OK, about "exit pupil" diameter, and why it may concern your binocular selection... Exit pupil diameter is the measurement of the size of the "ray " of light leaving the ocular lens of the binoculars. You can see, and compare sizes, by simply holding up the binocs at arms-length and aiming them at a bright portion of sunlit sky. You'll see a small, bright, round spot of light in the otherwise black field of the ocular lens. You can calculate the diameter of the exit pupil by dividing the objective lens diameter by the magnification, for example, 32mm objective lens, divided by eight power magnification, equals a 4mm exit pupil. 10x40 glasses yield the same 4mm exit pupil. The typical so-called "marine" use binocs are 7x50 for a very good reason, which is:
    • The exit pupil diameter is the image size you try to match to your eye's pupil when you line up your binocs with your eye. At maximum dilation, the human pupil is about 5mm diameter, and it contracts to much smaller diameter depending, mostly, on the amount of incoming light. The exit pupil of a relatively low magnification/large objective lens, as the 7x50, 7mm plus, is greater than the human pupil at maximum dilation, thus, allowing easy, non-critical alignment of the exit pupil with the human pupil. This is desirable when the viewer may be in an unsteady environment such as the rolling or pitching deck or tower of a vessel at sea. Think of it as trying to view a target through a cardboard paper towel tube vs. a lampshade --- bigger is better

    21mm Binoculars Telescope

    • Keeping in mind the foregoing discussions, there are applications for very small "compact" binoculars, some of which are not much larger than a pack of cigarettes, but of very high quality, albeit limited in field of view and exit pupil diameter. Almost none of any inexpensive offerings are worth even a first look, much less a second, but the high end brands offer excellent glass in amazingly compact sizes, at inversely proportionate prices

Many new amateur astronomers are anxious to buy their first telescope prior to learning the skies. They come with a soft carrying case and a tripod attachment device. If you do not have a tripod or don't want to use one, I would highly recommend a smaller pair of 10X Binoculars Telescope.

These bins are the best value for money you are likely to come across.
The 21mm Binoculars Telescope field is wider than stated, they are relatively light but solidly built and the optics are fine.
The only problem I've had is the mount, this is plastic and of no use whatsoever. It would have increased the overall quality of the product to have not included it at all. However, you don't always get one included with other brands and with the low cost of the bins I was happy just to order a new metal mount for a few quid.
So for an astronomy newbie these are a great first instrument, although a tripod and decent mount are a must.
For anyone with existing equipment or experience; these are not as good as high end optics but pound for pound (price not weight!) they are an extremely good buy.

Good Compact Binoculars Telescope. Exactly as described. Anymore powerful and you would need a tripod.
