How to Make Bird Feeders:

- Making a bird feeder is fun and easy, especially for kids. Here are three simple bird feeders that you and your children can enjoy putting together and hanging outside the window for some close-up time with the backyard birds.
- Instructions
- Decide where you want to hang the bird feeders. They will be great just outside the window so that you can observe the birds up close. Be sure they are about 6 feet away from where a squirrel or cat can jump from; the squirrel will steal the seeds and the cat will go after the birds.
- Install the feeder hangers or hooks beforehand so that when your feeders are ready, you won't have to worry about how to hang them.
- Make a pinecone bird feeder.
- Make a pinecone bird feeder. Choose a large open pinecone and tie a hanging string close to the stem end so that the pinecone is pointing straight down. Using a pastry brush, smear the entire pinecone with creamy peanut butter. Reach into the crevices. Grab handfuls of birdseed and gently sprinkle them onto the pinecone. Turn the pinecone while sprinkling so that it becomes completely covered with seeds.
- Make an orange peel bird feeder.
- Make an orange peel feeder. Peel an orange in a circular motion; make sure the peel is one long strand. Tie a hanging string to one end. Brush creamy peanut butter all over the orange peel and dip the strand in a dish of birdseeds until it's completely covered.
- Paint an unfinished wood bird feeder.
- Make a "paint-it-yourself" unfinished wood bird feeder. Purchase a birdfeeder project from a crafts store. Paint it with your favorite acrylic colors and let it dry overnight. Fill it with birdseeds.
- Hang the bird feeders by the window.
- Hang your birdfeeders by the window and watch your backyard birds enjoy the treat you've prepared for them.
How to Keep Squirrels off a Bird Feeder:

- Squirrels are wily little rodents noted for being able to outsmart just about anyone who tries to deny them access to bird feeders. Squirrels can walk on wire, jump almost 4 feet straight up, leap 10 feet across, and climb almost anything.
- Instructions
- Contact a bird-feeding specialty store either in person, by phone or online, and ask about "squirrel-proof" bird feeders.
- Purchase a recommended feeder.
- Buy or make a squirrel baffle if you intend to mount the feeder on a post. A baffle is designed to foil squirrels that can jump or climb onto the feeder from the ground.
- Mount feeder on post and add baffle according to instructions. Or,
- Mount your feeder in the middle of a long wire that extends from your house to a tree in your yard.
- String empty film canisters, empty plastic soda bottles, sections of hose, old vinyl records, spools of thread, or PVC pipe all along the wire. Use any objects that will cause squirrels to slip off the wire if they walk on it.
- Try providing squirrels with their own feeding station if all else fails, and give them whole dried corn and seeds that they like.

04-21-2011- Other Thoughts: This Bird Feeder looks smaller than I thought it would. But it is very attractive. It is also very easy to add the food. I may buy another one after we've had a chance to use it.

02-09-2011- Other Thoughts: This Raccoon Shaped Bird Feeder is attractive, easy to use and functional. The only thing I don't like, and maybe this is just my seed, but the birdseed sometimes gets stuck in the openings so I have to go in with my finger to get the birdseed to come out again. Other than that, can't complain.

04-06-2011- Other Thoughts: On the plus side, blue jays can't perch on this feeder! The only negative is that the small birds aren't especially fond of this one, possibly due to its narrow tray and the types of birds around my house. It's a pretty feeder, however, and well constructed. Very easy to fill. The little birds do eat from it occasionally, so I don't mind having bought it. Maybe with spring and some different birds in the area, there will be more activity.
