How to Remove Ink Spots From a Cotton Blouse:
No matter how careful you try to be, ink accidents happen with clothing. Ironically, ink rarely manages to make it on the 10-year-old T-shirt you wear to change the oil in the car--but if you're wearing your favorite cotton blouse, leaky ink pens seem to lurk in every corner. Before you relegate the blouse to your oil-changing clothes pile, try removing the ink stain from the blouse using a couple of home remedies
Treat with Rubbing Alcohol
- Soak a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and saturate the ink spots. Allow the blouse to sit for 10 minutes
- Wash the blouse in a washing machine with regular laundry detergent using the hottest water allowable for the fabric. Add one cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle
- Inspect the blouse before drying to ensure you've removed the ink spots. If the ink is still visible, you can repeat the rubbing alcohol treatment or try treating the stain with white vinegar
Treat with White Vinegar
- Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and saturate the ink spots
- Mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar and 3/4 cup of cornstarch in a plastic bowl to create a paste
- Apply the paste to the ink stains. Use your fingers to spread the paste over the ink stains. Allow the paste to dry completely
- Wash the blouse in the washing machine with regular laundry detergent using the hottest water allowable for the fabric. Add one cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. You do not need to rinse the paste off the blouse before washing
- Inspect the blouse before drying to ensure you've removed the ink spots. If the ink is still visible, you can repeat the vinegar treatment or try treating the stain with rubbing alcohol
How to Remove Old Stains on a Blouse:
Old, set-in stains can be the most difficult type of stains to remove. This is because the stain has had a chance to dry and completely seep into the fibers of the fabric. If you notice an old stain on a blouse, for example, you'll need to use gentle and specific cleaning methods to not only remove the stain but protect the fine fabric of your blouse
- Scrape away any residue of the old stain from your blouse using a dull kitchen knife
- Add some vinegar to a cloth and use it to dab the stain firmly. If the blouse is made from cotton, rayon, triacetate, silk or acetate, skip this step
- Mix several drops of clear shampoo with a few cups of warm water. Dip a cloth into the mixture and dab your blouse firmly. Continue to do so for two or three minutes until the fabric is nearly dry
- Put some rubbing alcohol into an eyedropper if you can still see the old stain on your blouse. Test one drop of rubbing alcohol on the inside of the blouse to make sure the fabric responds well to it. Add several drops directly to the stain and blot immediately. This is especially effective at lifting stains like ink
- Apply a pre-wash stain remover to your blouse and let it sit for several minutes. Read the label on the container of stain remover to make sure it mentions the fabric your blouse is made of. Some fabrics, such as silk, may need a specifically designed stain remover. Launder your blouse as usual, or gently remove the stain with a few dabs of warm water if it is dry-clean only, and then air dry
