Bookmark:
A bookmark is a thin marker, commonly made of paper or card, used to keep the reader's place in a book and to enable the reader to return to it with ease. Other frequently used materials for bookmarks are leather, metals like silver and brass, silk, wood and fabrics. Many bookmarks can be clipped on a page with the aid of a page-flap
History
Bookmark Decorating Ideas:
Bookmarks hold a reader's place in a book to enable the reader to come back exactly where he left. Bookmarks may be ornate brass, hand-embroidered, etched or embossed creations or effluvia--such as a spare receipt, concert ticket or even a paper straw wrapper. If you're crafty and enjoy a bit of do-it-yourself activity, you can create unique bookmarks that show off your interests and hold your page place in style
Charity Support
Decorate a bookmark to show off your support for a charity. Many charities have symbols or logos they use to represent their cause; for example, breast cancer charities use the pink ribbon symbol and the World Wildlife Fund uses the panda. If you're artistic, draw the symbols by hand onto a strip of paper; otherwise, print a copy off from the Internet. Type or hand-write the charities' slogans, where applicable, such as the American Red Cross slogan of "Give Blood. Save Lives." Then, run your bookmark through a laminating machine or do a do-it-yourself version of laminating by laying a strip of packing tape on top of the bookmark, flipping the bookmark over, then laying another strip of packing tape on the bottom side. Cut around the extra edges for a strong, sturdy, water-resistant way to keep your place in your next novel
Author Fanatic
Show off your love of a particular author by creating a bookmark to use whenever you're reading her books. Search for the author's name on a bookseller's online website, then print out a list of all of her available publications (size the font of the list so that it stays within the confines of the width of your bookmark; for example, adjust the font size to 10 points). Run a highlighter across the books you've already read or collected, then glue the bookmark to a piece of cardboard to add some strength. Print out a copy of the author's picture to add to the bookmark or an image of one of her book covers and glue to the other side of the cardboard. This bookmark not only keeps your place in the book, but reminds you of what books are next on your list of must-reads
Pet Photo Collage
See an image of your beloved cat, puppy, hamster or even arachnid every time you open your books. Consider making a pet photo collage bookmark, quickly created with just a few household supplies. Take about 10 photos of your pet (for book-themed settings, bring your pet into your library or position a few books around him, with one open like he's reading), then scan or upload them to the computer. Resize them to fit your planned bookmark size (consider a width of about 2.5 inches), then print them out. Glue the pictures vertically onto a piece of cardboard, letting one side dry before gluing to the other side. You'll have two rows of pet pictures to see each time you start reading again. To preserve the photos, cover the bookmark in cling film wrap (available with the tin foil in the grocery store), cutting around any excess
