How to Teach a Baby to Use a Straw:
Drinking out of straws is recommended by speech therapists as opposed to drinking out of a sippy cup. It allows for proper training of the tongue, which makes articulation of consonants easier for children. Most babies catch on fairly quickly to drinking out of a straw and with very few problems.
- Instructions
- Try a straw when baby is around nine months to one year of age. Before this, baby should just drink from a bottle or a breast.
- Start with juice boxes. These allow for the drink to be squeezed while the baby has the straw in her mouth. Squeezing it makes the juice go up the straw, so baby can understand what exactly it is used for. The only problem with these drinks is, if baby holds it, it will be a huge mess, since she will squeeze it. Make sure an adult is holding the drink at all times.
- Tell the child to kiss the straw. Since sucking a straw is very similar to kissing, many children are able to drink from a straw after trying to kiss it.
- Avoid getting frustrated. Getting angry will only lead to baby not wanting to use it, so stay calm and don't push baby to use it too hard.
- Celebrate small victories. If baby does it right, encourage her to do it again, and praise her for doing it right.
- Be patient. Learning how to use a straw is not easy for a baby who is used to breast- or bottle-feeding.

06-04-2011- Other Thoughts: This bottle is a life saver. We use it on car rides, plane rides, for middle of the night feedings (just pop it in his mouth and I go back to bed), on long walks in the stroller, or when I'm baby wearing my little one in the store and he gets hungry-- I just pop the podee in his mouth and keep it moving. Essentially, it comes in handy any time baby is ready to eat at an inconvenient time for you.

05-14-2011- Other Thoughts: I bought this feeding straw for my grandson. I was skeptical at first - but WOW! Before using this feeding straw he would spit up over 1/2 of what he eat - BUT NO MORE! Great for crib, stroller, car seat, swing, bouncer, etc! Like a straw that an adult would use!

05-26-2011- Other Thoughts: Handsfree Feeding Kit is the best thing since disposable diapers. If I could, it would get more than five stars. I just wish I would have gotten them sooner. My daughter doesn't like to hold her own bottle; this makes it hard when we are in the car and all she does is cry. With the Straw she gets her feeding and we get peace. It was great on the airplane trip we just took. When we have our next child I will be getting more than two kits.
