How to Use Hand Wraps With Boxing Gloves

    Cotton Gloves

    • There are two accepted ways to wear hand wraps underneath boxing gloves. One gives your skin more coverage in case your gloves rub or scratch your hands. The other was developed to reinforce the wrists for full-contact work. Which method you use will depend on two factors: your personal set of gloves, and what you plan to use them for. For light speed bag work, you may prefer to use the first method if your gloves are unusually long; however, you may not want to bother with it if they stop at your wrists. For heavy work, or if your wrists are particularly weak, you will always want to use the second method. A few blisters on your knuckles beats permanent joint or nerve damage
    • Method 1: Forearm and Hand Protection
    • Locate the loop at the end of one of your wraps. Drape it over your thumb. Open your palm and flex your hand. This will expand your wrist and forearm slightly, and keep you from wrapping too snugly. Pull the wrap across the back of your wrist, then guide it once more around. Begin wrapping in a spiral motion down your forearm toward your elbow. About halfway down your forearm, reverse direction and start wrapping back toward your wrist
    • When you reach your thumb, guide the wrap over your palm on the inside of your thumb. Continue wrapping until both sets of knuckles are covered. Reverse direction again, being sure to cover any exposed areas. When you reach your thumb level, wrap in an X motion--first on the outside of your thumb, then on the inside again. Do this only once or you will run out of wrap
    • Continue to wrap down your forearm until you run out of wrap. Fasten it securely around your arm using the Velcro provided. Clench and unclench your fist to test the snugness. You should still be able to close all your fingers tightly, but you should not feel any tingling sensation in your arm or hand
    • Use the same method to cover your opposite hand with the remaining wrap
    • Method 2: Wrist Reinforcement

    Training Boxing Gloves

    • Locate the loop at the end of one of your wraps. Drape it around your middle finger. As before, flex your hand to keep from wrapping too tightly. Pull the wrap across the back of your wrist, then guide it thrice more around for maximum protection
    • Bring the wrap in an upward diagonal motion across the back of your hand and wrap three times around your palm on the inside of your thumb. On your last pass, go on the outside of the thumb and make a single loop around it. Drawing the wrap up diagonally along the back of your hand, make another loop between each of your fingers and the outside of your thumb (begin with the space between your index and middle fingers and working outward from there)
    • When finished wrapping between each of your fingers, wrap the palm once more on the inside of the thumb. Use any remaining wrap to reinforce the wrist. When you run out, fasten it as before with the Velcro. Check the snugness as before
    • Use the same method to cover your opposite hand with the remaining wrap

How to Bandage the Hand or Wrist

    Boxing Bandage

    • Knowing how to bandage a hand or wrist in the event of an injury is an important skill, particularly if you enjoy hiking or camping in the wilderness. Wrapping an injured hand or wrist will keep it immobilized, helping to prevent further injury. In case of a wound, wrapping can also stem blood flow and provide a barrier between the wound and dirt or bacteria. Incorrect technique, however, can cut off circulation or irritate broken bones or tendons. Take the time to learn the proper way to bandage a hand or wrist before attempting
    • Hand Bandaging
    • Fold a square piece of cloth in half to make a triangle
    • Place the injured hand in the middle of the triangular bandage with the wrist at the base, or long side, of the bandage
    • Separate the injured person's fingers with absorbent material, additional cloth or cotton pads, to prevent skin irritation
    • Fold the tip of the triangle down over the hand and tuck excess material underneath the hand
    • Cross the ends of the triangle over the top of the hand, one at a time, taking them around and underneath the wrist
    • Tie the ends in a secure knot or fasten with a safety pin
    • Hand Bandage For Palm Wound
    • Fold handkerchief or cloth into a long rectangle, resembling a tie
    • Center the cloth over the palm of the hand, letting the ends hang down
    • Wrap the pinky-side end around the back of the hand, pulling it over the base of the thumb and back across the palm
    • Take the thumb-side end across the back of the hand, over the palm and between the thumb and index finger
    • Cross the ends over the back of the hand, bringing them up over the wrist to cross them again.
    • Tie the ends around the back of the wrist with a secure knot
    • Wrapping the Wrist and Hand
    • Place the hand palm-side up, and wrap an elastic bandage, starting at the outside or pinky-side of the wrist. Make one turn around the wrist before going over the back of the hand and cross the palm
    • Pull the bandage diagonally through the space between the thumb and index finger
    • Complete one more pass; wrap the bandage across the palm, under the thumb, over the back of the hand, across the wrist, up over the back of the hand and between the thumb and index finger
    • Move on to wrap the wrist, pulling the bandage around the wrist diagonally to make a crisscross pattern
    • Continue wrapping until you reach the end of the bandage; pin securely with safety pins
    • Tips & Warnings
    • Check the fingers and fingernails for circulation; fingers should be warm and pink. If fingers are blue and cool to the touch, loosen the bandage
    • Clean and dress wounds before applying a hand or wrist bandage
    • Wrap the hand before wrapping the wrist, and never wrap the wrist alone; wrapping only the wrist can lead to swelling in the hand
