How to Restore Wedding Gowns at Home



A wedding gown, when preserved correctly, can become a family heirloom. If you have a purchased or inherited a vintage dress that has lost some of its luster over the years or has become damaged through imperfect preservation, it is possible to restore it to its original beauty from home. Imperfections such as stains, discolorations, yellowing, broken materials or torn fabrics can be replaced or retrofitted to help the dress maintain its original glamor and appeal

• Fill a large tub with lukewarm water. Add a small amount of bleach-free liquid detergent and mix with your hand. Remove any metal buttons from the dress before soaking the dress in water to prevent rusting. Dip your gown into the tub and allow it to soak for up to several days. Periodically push the gown in the water to agitate the detergent in the water and remove discoloration
• Remove the dress from the tub and lay it out on a flat, dry surface. Check for any stains or discoloration not cleaned during the soak. Dab lemon juice onto the stain and rub gently with a washcloth. If the stain is ink, you might need to spray the area lightly with hairspray before wiping it with a cloth. Soda water and borax are also efficient stain removal options you can use to clean your dress
• Replace any metal buttons you removed before the soak. Check your dress for any other imperfections, such as loose threads, missing fabrics, tears or holes. Delicately repair these areas. For example, re-attach any loose lace trim with an ordinary needle and thread. If a zipper is broken, you will need to use a seam ripper for remove it from the dress. Then, using your zipper sewing machine attachment, replace the broken zipper
• Look underneath the dress, especially if the gown features a petticoat. What may appear to be a ripped trim could actually be tulle that is torn underneath the dress. Replace or re-sew any torn materials. If your hem is ripped or detached, replace by hand or by using a serger for a clean, professional edge
• Press your gown to remove any wrinkles. Laying it flat to dry will help to lessen the presence of wrinkles. If you have a fabric steamer with a low-heat setting, this is the safest option for removing wrinkles from your dress without damaging the fabric. An iron set to the correct heat for synthetic fabrics is also useful for smoothing wrinkles from a wedding gown
