    How to Craft Sewing Buttons

Print this article Picking out buttons can be fun. However, there may come a time when you just can't find the buttons you need, or you prefer to make buttons that are specific to your project, whether it's a bag or a piece of clothing. With some time and scraps of fabric, you can make craft sewing buttons that will meet your requirements and artistic desire.

    Instructions

    • Decide on the size of your craft button. Buy bone rings that are the size you wish.
    • Make a template for your craft button out of card stock or cardboard. Draw a circle that's 2 1/2 times larger than the size of the button. Draw a smaller circle inside the larger circle that is the same size as the bone ring. Cut out the larger circle and the smaller circle inside. The end result should resemble a very flat miniature doughnut.
    • Chose the fabric from which you want to make your craft buttons. If you are concerned about the fabric shrinking, prewash it before proceeding. Lay the fabric facedown on your work table and trace around your template for the button. Trace around the inner circle as well.
    • Measure the distance between the inner circle and the outside edge of the circle, and draw another circle that is midway between these circles.
    • Thread a needle with thread of your choice and sew along the circle midway between the center and the outer edge. Make the stitches purposefully large so that you can pull on the end of the thread when you have finished and create gathers. Make sure that when you do the last stitch, the needle is on the patterned or right side of the fabric.
    • Put the bone ring in the middle of the fabric, then pull the thread, drawing the fabric around it. If you need to, move the fabric to change the position of the pattern to center it. Anchor the fabric by making some stitches through the folds at the back unfinished side of the button, not far from the ring. This will keep the folds from undoing. Do not cut the thread. The unfinished ends of the fabric will extend beyond the stitches.
    • Press open the fabric on the back of the button. Keep the tension on the thread. Tuck the unfinished fabric into the center opening. You can use the handle of a knitting needle to help you in this process. When you are finished tucking the ends in, the center hole will be smaller with a finished edge.
    • Make two stitches across the back of the button. Pull the thread tight then make two more stitches crossing the first stitches, making an "X." Check the front of the button. If it is smooth, then continue to the next step. If not, make another few stitches.
    • Sew around the inside of the bone ring with the same thread or contrasting thread. Make the stitches neat and even.
    • Finish the back of the button. Cut a slightly smaller circle of felt and hold it in position against the back of the button. Whip stitch it in place. Lay a paintbrush across the center back of the button. Make a stitch around the paintbrush, then slip the paintbrush out. Wrap the loop with thread, then tie a knot. Repeat Steps 1-10 to make other craft sewing buttons.

    How to Collect Sewing Buttons

Print this article Some of the first buttons appearing during the 10th century were made of cast metal. They've evolved over the centuries, but continue to be one of our most useful inventions. Grandma's button box was also a source of entertainment for children. Little ones enjoyed sifting through the different shapes and colors, looking for matching pairs. You may want to start your own button box or begin a collection of rare and interesting buttons.

    Instructions

    • Check your grandmother's treasures. At one time, the button box was a staple in every woman's home. She stored her new and leftover buttons in a tin, box or jar. The garment may have worn out, but the buttons were reusable.
    • Remove buttons from clothing before you discard them. If you're starting a button box of your own, choose a special tin or pretty box to store them in.
    • Visit used clothing stores. Many times, they'll have inexpensive old garments from estates, with interesting and sometimes rare buttons.
    • Browse junk stores, flea markets and antique stores for old clothes and buttons. Occasionally, you may find button boxes, which still contain their original contents of buttons and other little sewing treasures.
    • Join a button-exchange club or start one. Someone else may have that special button you're looking for.
    • Find local auctions, Internet auctions and estate sales. These are often a good source for older collections of sewing supplies, button boxes, old button up shoes, clothing and military uniforms.
    • Look for books, such as the one in the resource section of this article, which provide extensive information about the history, descriptions and value of buttons, if you're interested in becoming a collector.
