What is an Addon Handgrip or Battery Grip? Many big brand SLR camera producers including Nikon and Canon, now give photographers the option of an addon handgrip / battery grip. The image below demonstrates what a battery grip looks like without the camera attached.

With a camera attached, it makes the setup look more squarish than rectangular. Apart from looking larger and more impressive, there are other advantages to using a battery grip.
Advantages of SLR Camera Battery Grips
- Battery grips make it easier for those with larger hands to grip the camera. In some cases even those with smaller hands will find it useful when holding the camera in a portrait (horizontal) position.
- Many battery grips nowadays, are designed to hold more than one battery. For example, the battery grip for Canon's EOS 400D (Digital Rebel XT / Kiss), holds two batteries. Many photographers will recall a number of times when they've been midway through a shot, when they find the camera locks up due to a low battery. By the time they've changed the power supply, the shot is long gone. Adding a grip that holds 2 batteries to your setup, will help solve this problem. The camera won't lock up until both batteries are low.
- Some battery grips have an added advantage of weather protection. Many photographers believe they extend the battery life in cold conditions when normally they run down quicker.

05-25-2011- Other Thoughts: I just got this grip today. I have to say it lived up to my expectations. At first I didn't think it would be very good in build quality to the official Nikon grip, but after reading all the reviews and for the low price to try it out. All I have to stay is I won't be buying a official grip from Nikon anymore. It works exactly the same as the Nikon grip and the actually grip feels better than the grip on my Nikon D90. All the buttons work very smoothly. IT does feel a little heavy now though because I'm not used to adding a grip yet, but that's expected. Only complaint is that it still doesn't have the IR Remote. Yet, if it was advertised without the remote I would still recommend this product. The grip I received was made by Meike and not the one shown in the pictures. I'll post a picture of it. Perfect product! Love it! Recommend it!

05-05-2011- Other Thoughts: The grip supports two batteries. I use two made by Nikon and they both fit snugly into the grip without jiggling. The door for the battery compartment closes tight and stays shut. When closed, the door doesnt jiggle. As noted in other reviews, if you tap on the door when closed it sounds hollow - which stands to reason.

04-30-2011- Other Thoughts: This is a good grip and one of only two that I have seen so far for the Nikon D3100. Unlike just about every other review I have read about it, it snuggles tightly against the bottom of the camera body with no jiggle or rattle. The default battery compartment door tucks into the vertical bit that snakes into the camera bodies battery slot and does not rattle.

04-28-2011- Other Thoughts: It's a good battery grip, but the shutter release button didn't work. (yes I had the cable plugged in) It might have not worked because I didn't have two batteries in it, so I'll have to purchase another battery then well see if it works. But the this grip does make the D3100 feel like your actually holding something. I don't think I could go back to not having a grip, it just adds weight and grip to the camera. I'll give it a 5 because the shudder release might work if I had both batteries put in it.

03-30-2011- Other Thoughts: it feels cheap, light, and constructed with a "bare bones" tactic (plastic feels dollar store esk) but it gets the job done. I don't mind the battery door and lock ring being loose, my camera already rattles because I have a strap with key ring disconnects like some of the d3 cameras do, but they don't have much play unless you mess with them. If you didn't know it was loose you wouldn't of known unless you were really OCD

01-19-2011- Other Thoughts: This product is actually better than I thought. It is not solid but gets the job done. It lines up nicely with the D3100 body and pretty much does what it says. Shipping time was not bad at all. Make sure you buy an extra battery because the D3100 battery dies very quick.

01-12-2011- Other Thoughts: Plug-and play functionality, in a sense, though you will have to remove the battery door (simply hold at a 30-degree angle and pull gently). The battery door stores neatly in a slot in the coupler. The included cable attaches easily and securely.
