How to protect your camera in bad weather?

When it comes to ugly weather on a hike, to protect your gear all precautions need must be taken to keep your camera working by staying reasonably warm and dry. Here are some tips for guarding your camera against the elements.

    Things You'll Need:

    • Plastic bags
    • Shower cap
    • Dry rice grains or silica desiccant packets
    • Umbrella
    • Towel
    • Camera rain sleeve

    • In cold weather your first concern is batteries because they tend to have a shortened life span when used in low temperatures. Keep your camera's batteries in a warm pocket or glove whenever your camera is not in use, and simply place them back in when you are ready to shoot again
    • Moisture in the air can also be a problem in cold weather. Wrap your camera in a plastic bag while it is in your camera bag and whenever it is not in use. You can also use a shower cap for the same purpose, they can fold up small and cost very little
    • In the cold air static electricity becomes more prominent. A shock of static electricity can leave little lightning strikes on your film when advancing or rewinding. Try to unload static build up on your body by touching a metal object to release a spark on the object instead of your camera, and then you can advance or rewind your film slowly
    • Perhaps the most volatile weather for your equipment is a rain storm. Covering your camera and lens with a plastic bag is a quick fix, but investing in a rain sleeve is much better. It is tailored to fit around the shape of a camera and will allow easier use of your camera than a wrapped up plastic bag
    • Grains of rice or those little silica desiccant packets can be placed into your equipment cases to absorb any moisture inside
    • Use an umbrella to shield your camera from rain or high winds that can shake your set up and blur the picture
    • Finally, always keep a dry towel with you. Chances are your equipment will still receive some moisture and you will need the towel for a quick drying

    Tips & Warnings

    • A hair dryer can be used to completely dry your camera after you have made it back indoors
    • Try using clear plastic kitchen wrap on your camera in wet weather as well. It sticks to itself and you can easily leave room for moving parts (focusing, film advance)
    • Using a lens hood is another good way to keep rain off of your lens. The effects of rain inside your camera are very serious, experiment with these suggestions before actually taking your camera out into the field

How to Choose an SLR Camera Bag:

    • Make a list of all the camera equipment you want to store. Decide if you want to include all of your equipment or just a few select items. Include room for battery chargers, batteries and media cards or rolls of film.
    • Decide where you want to shop for your SLR camera bag. Browse online camera stores for a variety of mailorder options. Visit your local camera shop to see what they have in stock. Look in photography hobbyist magazines for ads, photos and listings of retailers who will ship camera bags.
    • Traditional shoulder-strap bags are the most common. Satchel-style bags allow a main strap to cross over the torso. Waist-, hip- and fanny pack-style SLR camera bags help distribute weight over the hips. Some bags also come with rollers, which resemble luggage. Backpack-style bags are also available.
    • When testing a bag at the store, try the movable velcro inserts. Arrange them to see if you gear will fit. Decide if you like zippers, velcro, snaps and closures with straps. Adjust the straps and test all the parts for ease of function.
    • Bring your photography equipment with you to the store and ask to try out the camera bags to see if your gear will fit. Carry the bag around the store to see how much it weighs and if it is comfortable

    • When the bag gets wet, you can wipe it with a dry cloth to fully dry before using, otherwise it will cause fabrics to fade
    • Please keep it from sunlight and high humidity environment
    • Protect your digital camera from accidental damage and scratches
    • Do not use chemical lotion (alcohol, alkali, etc.) to wash it, otherwise it will cause deform of the product
    • If you don't use your camera for a long time, you can take it out from your bag. Reserve it at the other place

Massa Neoprene Protector
15:09:23 04-04-2012
Easy to attach to the camera. Just clips together with velcro tabs.

Actually a bit tight for my Nikon, but works OK. I went with the general postage. Took about 6 weeks. Worth the wait tho.

I bought this as a quick and easy cover for my Nikon D5100. It is a tad small but still fits quite well enough to protect my camera whilst in my travel bag and easily removes.

Just what I was looking for
04:15:11 03-06-2012
Inexpensive, fits camera well, not bulky, seems to be well-constructed, covers all the breakable parts of the camera and lens.

Took a long time to receive it.

I was looking for a cover that would protect my camera and lens from minor bumps and mild weather conditions. But, I didn't want a bulky case or bag. This cover fits my 50D with the 17-40mm lens perfectly. Now I can take my camera when I ski without worrying about getting snow all over it.

This DSLR camera bag was referred by a friend and I was looking for this kind of product for quite some time. It is a great product and ideal for just carrying the camera with one lense attached.

Compact & very protective
00:00:00 11-15-2011
This is great dslr camera bg for putting your camera into your luggage and not worrying about it getting dinged. <br/>I prefer a modular approach like this Canon EOS bag (I have a neoprene lens cover as well) because a single camera bag for everything doesn't allow you to cut down luggage size - you either take it or you don't.

Happy Customer
00:00:00 11-10-2011
I used a bag like this which had seen better days so I looked around for a replacement. This neoprene camera bag is slightly larger which enables me to carry more things but without being at all bulky. Ideal for having on holidays but also when I have no jacket on here in the UK in hot weather and I can carry my wallet, credit cards and other things out of sight whilst keeping my hands free. Good quality soft neoprene at a really good price in comparison with others I had looked at. Would buy this same item again for sure.

Great Minimalist Camera Case
00:00:00 11-07-2011
This is a great DSLR camera bag. It fits my eos with mid-size zoom lens well. One reviewer noted that this fits the eos with battery pack, but I don't see how. I think that user may have the DSLR Pro model. Also note that the fastener on the pouch is two snap buttons. I personally believe that Velcro would have worked better, but that would be the only con. A good alternative to the Nikon branded pouch that is more than double the money

Inexpensive Protection for you Expensive Gear
00:00:00 11-04-2011
This canon eos camera pouch snugly fits my Nikon D200 with Battery Grip and mid-sized lenses PERFECTLY! It is perfect for traveling or when you are going to be moving your camera from bag to bag and don't want it to get banged up. The neoprene gives it a slight level of protection from the elements (although is not waterproof) and the lens mounted rubber ring lets you quickly pull the pouch on/off while keeping it "attached" to the camera. This makes it super easy and convenient to put the pouch back on and lessens liklihood of loss.

It's okay, what there is of it
00:00:00 11-01-2011
I was looking for a holster style dslr camera bag for my EOS 5D Mark II, and this looked like it. It's well constructed, and carries well. However, it would only accommodate the smallest of my telephoto lenses. And I have to remove the diopter correcting eyepiece and cup and tuck it next to the lens, or the case won't zip closed. Want to pack any extras, like a spare battery, a filter or two? Forget it. The interior mesh pocket has no expansion room (unless you don't want the camera), and the two exterior mesh pockets are so snug, the best I could do would be a spare flash card or two. For a holster for casual shooting, I guess this is okay - - anything more serious (a bigger lens, more accessories), look elsewhere.
