How to Take Photos in Direct Sunlight:
- Turn the flash on. It's tempting to think of the flash as a device to be used in low light situations, but direct light is where the flash is the most useful. The flash is less bright than sunlight so it will not brighten the already bright spots in the picture. What it will do is eliminate the dark shadows that can hide your subject
- Increase the exposure time of the pictures to further create balance between the bright light and dark shadows. The exposure time is the amount of time the shutter is open and takes in light. It's measured in fractions of a second and almost all cameras allow you change the setting in their manual modes. An exposure time of 1/100 is a good rule of thumb for pictures in direct light, but you can go a little slower or a little faster as necessary
- Block direct light from the camera. Direct light shining at the camera increases the washout effect. Stand in the shade of a tree or raise a hand to block the sun from hitting the camera
- Use an appropriate white balance. White balancing tells your camera what color is white and helps it portray colors more accurately. In direct light, it's best to manually white balance your camera. However, you can also choose "daylight" from your camera's white balance presets
- Position yourself so the sun is to your side. Direct light behind your subject will cause washout in pictures and direct light behind the camera will cause shadows. It is best to position yourself and your subject to the side of the light. The light shining on your subject can also create a bit of a 3D effect in the picture
How to Choose a Camera Lens Protector:

The glass on the camera lens is something that must be protected. Certain aspects of the lens can be repaired, but damage to the glass is permanent in many cases. There are several methods and products used to protect the glass, and the correct method of protection depends on the lens. DSLR cameras have separate lenses that can have an attached filter for protection. Point-and-shoot-style cameras will require other forms of protection, and medium-body cameras depend on the manufacturer- Check the lens for threads. The majority of DSLR lenses will have threads for screw-on filters. Some zoom cameras will have the threads on the permanent lens and very few point-and-shoot cameras will have the threads
- Check the lens for a diameter reading. Use a clear screw-on filter that matches the diameter. Twist the filter counterclockwise before making the clockwise turns to ensure that it does not become cross-threaded
- Use a front filter for cameras without threads or with outdated thread diameters. The front filter is held in front of the lens while photographing. Specialty hoods are also effective for holding the filter in front of the lens and protecting the glass
- Protect the point-and-shoot lens with LCD screen protectors. The point-and-shoot is not compatible with most filter covers, and the clear plastic will help protect the glass
- Cover the entire camera body with a waterproof bag or case for shooting in wet climates. The lens will become damaged by water unless you are using a waterproof camera with sealed rings
Tips & Warnings:

- Add a permanent clear filter to all of your lenses. This will prevent forgetting the protection and accidentally damaging the lens
- Lens filters and covers are effective for protecting the glass, but abusing the lens can still cause permanent damage

05-10-2011- Other Thoughts: This will extend the back of the camera by about a 1/2". I had already been using the canon extension for the view finder and this also easily attaches. It looks like it's part of the camera and reasonably priced.

04-13-2011- Other Thoughts: This sunshade has solved all my problems. Plus, I found out that one can remove the flip-shade and still keep the protective covering over the display, brilliant! The only issues I have with it are that I keep almost poking myself in the eye with the shade up trying to take a picture, and the snap is sometimes a little hard to pop open when my fingernails are particularly short.

03-24-2011- Other Thoughts: its just plastic so just some caution in opening it and it should be fine, otherwise you may break the connector plastic pegs and have to get a new one. But for its purpose it is absolutely a must!

03-17-2011- Other Thoughts: I got this product to protect the LCD screen and it mor than handily did the job. The pop-up shade is a bit clumsy to use the fuction buttons but its better than screwing up a screen. A great security blanket.
