How to Choose an External Microphone for a Camcorder:

    Camera Microphone

While camcorders are equipped with a built-in microphone to allow for sound and image to be perfectly synchronized, the built-in microphone is usually surround sensitive, so it tends to pick up surrounding sounds. In most cases there is a microphone socket on your camcorder for an additional external microphone, which can be used to avoid unwanted disturbances. These items are easy to use and will greatly improve the sound quality of your video recordings. Here's how to buy an external microphone for a camcorder

    • Ensure that your camcorder is equipped with an external microphone socket. It should be a normal 1/8th" plug
    • Research the different types of external microphones to determine the one that is right for your sound-capturing needs. There are omnidirectional microphones which pick up sounds from all directions, unidirectional microphones which capture audio from one person at a time, or shotgun microphones which pinpoint the isolation of sound
    • Determine if you need a lavalier or handheld microphone. A lavalier microphone is a small microphone that can be clipped to a necktie or blouse to remain discreet. A handheld microphone is good to use when reporting or when the camera is focused on one person
    • Consider if you will need a hard-wired or wireless microphone based on your budget and recording needs
    • Look for noise-reduction features. Some high-end microphones will filter out background and wind noise
    • Determine if you want an omni-directional or uni-directional microphone. The omni-directional will record sounds that surround the microphone, while uni-directional will only record the sounds from the direction which it is pointed

    Tips & Warnings:

    DV Microphone

    • Hard-wired systems have limitations based on the length of the cord and you may pick up feedback if you are running the wiring parallel to other electrical wiring
    • Wireless systems have a never-ending demand for fresh batteries
    • If the jack on your camcorder is damaged from use you will need to take it in to a dealer to get the jack repaired. This is a lot less expensive then purchasing a new apparatus
    • Consider getting a shock mount for your external microphone. This will "float" your microphone so that internal camera noises and vibrations don't work their way up to your microphone

    About Camcorder Microphones:

Shinguu SG-108 Pro DV Stereo Microphone for Canon 60D 5D Mark II 7D

Sound is an important part of any home video. While most camcorders come with an internal microphone, these stock mics are typically low in quality. If you are looking to shoot high-quality videos or share your work on the web, then you need to know about aftermarket camcorder microphones

    Inputs

    • Aftermarket microphones, known as external mics, come in a variety of shapes and sizes. However, the first thing you need to know about them is the different input connections. Consumer camcorders typically come with a stereo audio jack. Professional video cameras usually feature an XLR jack. As such, it is important to know which kind of input your specific camcorder accepts. A camera with an audio jack will need an external microphone that includes a stereo input. Camcorders with XLR inputs need a mic with an XLR jack

    Types

    • Shotgun microphone--attaches to the top of the video camera; great for picking up sound from one direction and from many speakers
    • Lavalier microphone--often wireless, these external mics connect to the lapel or other article of clothing worn by the video subject; preferred when the subject's voice is the only sound trying to be recorded.
    • Hand-held microphone--most commonly associated with on-site news stories, these microphones are held by the video subject

    Function

    • A further distinction between camcorder microphones is their direction of sound pickup. Some camcorder mics are omnidirectional, which means that they are designed to pick up all sounds within a specific radius. Unidirectional microphones, on the other hand, are designed to block out ambient noise, only picking up sound within a narrow field of direction

    Wired vs. Wireless

    • External microphones can be wireless or wired. Wired external mics feed directly into the camera via a cord. Wireless mics use technology that allows sound to be wirelessly recorded by the camcorder. Wired mics are typically preferred for short-range shooting because they offer good sound recording at a more affordable price. Wireless microphones are suggested for video scenarios in which the video subject and the camcorder are a great distance apart

    Expert Insight

    • Don't let price be the most important factor when purchasing a camcorder microphone. While prices vary wildly, so does quality and construction. If you are truly looking for high-quality sound, be aware that you get what you pay for. Take some time to read model reviews and talk to salespeople to better understand which camcorder microphone best suits your needs

  • Other Thoughts: Works great with a SLR. I got this external camera microphone for my 5D MK II. The sound quality you can record from this mic is much better than the on board camera mix. It's best to get the wind muff together!
