How Does a Digital Camera Shutter Release Work?

In a digital camera, the film has been replaced by an electronic marvel called a charge-coupled device (CCD). The amount of light striking the CCD is controlled by an opening in the lens, called an aperture, and a shutter that allows light to strike the CCD. There are two kinds of shutters in digital cameras, and while they both serve the same purpose, they operate differently.

    Sensor Exposure

    • In digital cameras, the exposed light is captured on the CCD. The surface of this sensor is covered with thousands of photosites, small areas that capture the brightness for a single pixel in the image as minute electrical charges. The sensor is called a coupled-device because it is coupled to a storage area. When you press the camera shutter release, the sensor is exposed to light; when the exposure is complete, the charges stored in each photosite are converted to binary data and processed.

    Image Exposure

    • The amount of light reaching the CCD is called the exposure, which is controlled by two factors: the aperture and the shutter speed. The aperture is a variable-sized hole in front of the lens optics that adjusts to let more or less light through. The shutter can be of two types: an electronic shutter that turns the CCD on and off during the image exposure or a mechanical shutter.

    Electronic Shutters

    • In an electronic shutter system, the sensor dedicates a portion of each sensor photosite to store the charge for that pixel. This reduces the pixel's ability to capture light, since a portion of the pixel is not light-sensitive, but is holding the electrical charge for that pixel. Electronic shutters often have lower sensitivity, but the design eliminates the need for a mechanical shutter--which means cameras can be very small.

    Mechanical Shutters

    • In most film cameras, a shutter curtain opens at the film plane for the amount of time calculated for the exposure. This is called a focal plane shutter. A key advantage of this type of shutter is that it makes it easier to design a system with removable lenses. Digital cameras that use a mechanical shutter don't use the pixels on the CCD to store the charges that result from light striking the sensor, making more of each photosite available to capture light information from the scene. This generally results in improved image quality.

    Controlling the Exposure

    • Using a film camera, a photographer chooses a lens aperture and a shutter speed. Each aperture opening is half as large as the previous aperture, designated as f/8, f/11, f16 and so on. The same is true for shutter speeds: each speed is twice as fast as the previous speed, measured as 1/125th of a second, 1/250th of a second and so on. With digital shutters, the exposure can be determined by the computer in the camera, and the shutter and aperture set accordingly. You might end up with an aperture of f/9.765 and a shutter speed of 1/387th of a second.

Definition of a Camera Shutter Release:

    • Camera Basics: The two main components that work together on a camera is the aperture and shutter speed. The aperture controls how much light is let into the camera body, hitting the film/sensors, while the shutter speed dictates how long the light lasts.
    • Shutter Speed: Within the camera body is a mechanism that controls how long the film/sensors are exposed to the light. In low light situations, the shutter is open for longer. In bright light, the shutter opens and closes in a fraction of a second.
    • Shutter Release Cables: A shutter release cable connects to the camera and allows the photographer to take a photograph without having to touch the camera. In manual, 35 mm cameras, with no electronic controls, a wire with in the cable was pushed out to press down on the shutter release button. In modern cameras with electronic controls, the shutter release cable sends an electrical signal telling the camera to operate the shutter and take the photograph.
    • Low Light: In low light situations in which the shutter in the camera remains open for a longer period of time, any movement of the camera during the exposure will result in a fuzzy or blurry photograph. A tripod is employed in low light situations and a shutter release cable is used to further minimize any potential movement of the camera during the exposure.
    • Other Uses: Portrait photographers will often use a shutter release cable when they take portraits. It is easier for subjects to have a person to connect with when the portrait is being taken than just being asked to sit still, smile and look at the camera. The photographer can easily interact with his subjects, resulting in more natural, relaxed portraits.

    Instruction:

    • Before proceeding, insert the plug into the camera's remote control socket with the mark on plug facing the mark on socket (if available) and turn the camera on
    • The release button can be pressed halfway or all the way pressing it halfway activates the autofocus and sets the shutter speed and aperture settings
    • Pressing it completely takes the picture
    • For long exposures or continuous shooting, press the release button in the depressed button, slide the button back to its original position

    Package Included:

Camera Shutter Release
00:00:00 06-24-2011
What would I do without my remote switch? I would cry real tears. I bought it for nighttime photography and long exposures without camera shake but I use it for almost everything. Even portraiture benefits from this nifty little tool as subjects can be fooled into relaxing their faces while one is not behind the lens. I would have given it five stars but the cord is slightly shorter than I would like.

A great product
00:00:00 12-17-2010
I bought this for my Canon and it works wonderfully. As with the normal shutter, if I hold the button half-way down, the camera only focuses. Pressing the button completely takes the picture and holding the button down takes multiple pictures. It does everything I need, is easy to carry and use and is not expensive. A great product.

good shutter release
00:00:00 10-21-2010
This shutter release does exactly what it is intended for. I am using it with a Canon, and there are no problems of any kind. The cord is about 5m, which is plenty long for pretty much any situation I would be in. Feels solidly constructed, and looks clean too!

works well
00:00:00 08-27-2010
I use this with my camera to take pictures of documents at close range. Much easier to use for that purpose than a wireless remote, which must be in front of the camera to work. This works from any angle, exactly as promised. Yay! The remote is useful for self-portraits, I imagine, but probably little else.

you need this

If you plan on taking any photos requiring longer exposure times (particularly "bulb-mode" photographs in which the shutter remains open until you close it), you need this accessory for your camera.

great

I have purchased two of these. One worked for three months, but the second still works. I guess for this price they are great. Never regret.

Shutter Release
00:00:00 03-18-2010
Great tool for the novice photographer. Easy to use and super convenient to use. Sure there are not any bells and whistles, but I did not need them with this remote. It serves its purpose and in a day in the future I will buy one with some bells and whistles. Thank you for a remote that was so affordable the price point has really made me a great fan of Dino.

a little short
00:00:00 01-22-2010
This shutter release works flawlessly; I only give it 4 stars because the 5' length is a little short. You can get extensions for these at a reasonable price.
