How to Use a Car Charger for a Cell Phone:
Using a car charger is a basic part of cell phone maintenance; car chargers are handy in a pinch, especially for people who use their cars regularly throughout the day. Knowing how to use the charger--and what to do with it when it's not in use--can help keep your cell and car batteries in good working order.
Instructions
- Locate your phone's charging port. Consult your manual if you need to, but in general, charging ports are located either on the side or the bottom of the phone. There may be a protective plastic piece on a hinge; remove it gently with the phone end of the charging cord.
- Plug the phone end into your cell phone. The plug should go in easily and sit in place securely. If it does not, you may have inserted it incorrectly.
- Locate your car's electric outlet. In general, these are located on the center console, near or beneath the temperature control. In older cars (or in "smoker" models of new cars), the outlet will be marked by a black plastic button with a picture of a cigarette. In newer cars, the ports generally are covered by a snap-on plastic lid.
- Remove the cigarette lighter, if there is one.
- Insert the large, rounded end into the electrical outlet. Your phone should start charging, though some cars must be on or in accessory mode for the outlet to work.
- Look at the handle of the large, rounded end. Many chargers have lights to indicate that power is flowing through the charger.
How to Charge a Cell Phone in a Car:
Originally, people began buying cell phones for emergencies when away from home. Now, cell phones are integrated into every aspect of our life. Using the cell phone constantly throughout the day drains the battery, potentially leaving you out of luck when you may actually need the phone for an emergency. Luckily, charging the phone while traveling in your car is simple and cheap.
Instructions
- Determine the make and model of your cell phone. The name should be prominently displayed on the device and the model number will be listed on the cell phone's box. Each device has a different input connection for charging.
- Purchase a car charger from an electronics store or your cellular provider. Most stores have an assortment of car chargers for cell phones. Match the manufacturer and model number up with the appropriate charger. A cell phone car charger/adapter for Samsung may not work with a LG cell phone. It is important to get the right charger.
- Plug the charger into the cell phone. Be careful to properly connect the car charger and cell phone.
- Place the charging end into the car's cigarette lighter. Car chargers use the cigarette lighters for power. Newer cars have dedicated charging ports for just this purpose, though they are the same. Once plugged into the adapter, the phone will start charging (so long as the car battery is running).
- Disconnect the phone from the charger once the battery is full.

10-01-2011- Other Thoughts: The Portable Car Charger I received is slightly different from the picture, the usb ports are closer together and the led is on the top instead of the front. Doesn't look or feel cheap. Light and durable, and is inexpensive. I really like this product!
