How to Clean Wedding Bouquets:
'Dry' Clean:
- Shaking artificial floral products in a bag with a half cup of salt or cornmeal can remove dust from most surfaces, even hard-to-reach areas. The grains act as little scrubbers. Shake the item in the bag gently for a minute or two, repeat if necessary until satisfied
An 'In-Between' Method:
- If you don't want to remove any elements from a silk flower arrangement, and you think the assembly and fabrics can withstand some moisture, you may want to try filling a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of water and white vinegar to clean silk flowers. Position paper towels or newspaper around the base of the display to absorb drips and spray, then spritz away
- Test a small area first for colorfastness. This technique is NOT recommended for hand-wrapped or hand-painted artificial flowers
The 'Wet' Method:
- You probably guessed this was coming! No getting around it - this is probably the most effective technique to clean silk flowers that have a heavy coat of dust - if you think they can take it
- Never soak a hand-wrapped silk flower stem with water - this will dilute the glue particles and weaken the elasticity of the floral tape
- It is recommended to remove, clean, and then replace artificial floral stems one at a time if you are refreshing a silk floral arrangement. Test for colorfastness if you are not sure
Here are the steps:
- Fill the sink or a receptacle with COOL water (hot water may melt any glue that was used on wired petals or plastic leaf supports). Add a squirt of dishwashing detergent and mix
- Take your stems out one at a time and swish gently in the water. Remember, some elements may be glued together, like the undersides of leaves, and we don't want them coming apart. If there are stubborn areas of grime, you may rub them very lightly
- When the item is clean, BLOT dry as best you can on a soft cloth - do not rub! Replace in the arrangement and continue with the rest
How to Choose Roses for Wedding Bouquets:
- Choose the color of rose you want. White roses are a beautiful and elegant choice for a winter wedding while pink roses are appropriate in spring in summer. Red roses complement almost any season or type of wedding because of their versatility and because they symbolize love. Choose the color of rose that best suits your wedding theme
- Come up with a design. Once the color of your roses is picked out, think of what other flowers or greenery, if any, you would like to add to your bouquet. Fresh seasonal greens and baby's breath are popular choices. Accents such as feathers and beads can also add color and excitement to your wedding bouquet
- Place your order. Whether you plan on making your wedding bouquet yourself or hiring a florist, once you have the design of your bouquet figured out, its time to place your order. Ordering from a wholesale house specializing in roses and making the bouquet yourself can save a lot of money
- Arrange the bouquet. If you're a weekend warrior, the next step is to de-thorn and remove the leaves from the roses, then tape and wrap the stems. The rest is all up to your talent and imagination
How to Make a Silk Bridal Bouquet:
- Choose your flowers. Make sure that you remove the price tags and other plastic or paper tags on the stems. Take all your main flowers and arrange them in your hand the way that you picture your bouquet. Tape the stems with floral tape to hold them in place
- Add in filler, such as baby's breath or leaves and additional flowers. Play with the arrangement until you are happy. Tape the stems again with the new flowers and filler added. Make sure that the stems are strong and secure so that the flowers won't move around and ruin your arrangement. If you find the flowers shifting, you may need to cut small pieces of floral wire and wire inner stems to keep them in place. To do this you simply cut a small piece of wire, loop or twist it around one stem and then loop or twist the other end to another stem leaving the straight section of the wire as a spacer to keep the flowers apart and in the correct place
- Cut the stems of the flowers to be of the same length. You may need to use wire cutters to do this step. Make sure that the stems are all the same length. Tape the rest of the stems with floral tape all the way to the bottom so that the entire stem all the way up to about 3 inches from the base of the flowers is taped
- Plug in and heat up your hot glue gun. Put a hot glue stick in to allow it to warm. Take a wide ribbon and cover one end of it with hot glue. Start at the top of the floral tape. Place the end of the ribbon on the top of the floral tape. Hold it down and smooth it to make sure that the glue sticks and allow it to dry
- Wrap the ribbon around the stems at a diagonal downward several times covering all the floral tape. When you get to the bottom of the stem cut off the ribbon. Cover the end with hot glue and hold in place to secure it. Tie a thinner ribbon around the center of the stems and tie in a bow
