How to Tie:

The History of Mens Ties:
The men's neckties that were originally worn by the elite class of China and the Roman military bear little resemblance to the current fashion. Over the years, the style of ties has changed from being a large strip of fabric wrapped around a man's neck to designer pieces from the world's finest fashion designers
Origin
Members of the Roman military from 101 B.C. can be seen in paintings wearing tie-like cloths around their necks. In 221 B.C., Chinese men wrapped fabric around their necks. This ended after the Han Dynasty began and didn't resurface until the1900s
Evolution of the Necktie
In the 1600s, fashion trends clashed as countries fought and dress standards were challenged. European men of influence, power, and wealth broke through with their own fashion statement, wearing lace ruffs around their necks. Each class in European society had its own dictates of what was appropriate in neckwear. The high costs of France declaring war on Spain forced a ruling on the attire of all classes. Since ruffs were deemed frivolous and costly, Spain, Austria, and other Catholic countries enforced a strict law that men wear ruffs only at funerals and other somber or formal occasions
The Cravat
Croatian soldiers who fought as mercenaries for France in 1667 wore cravats, which means "necktie" in English, as part of their uniform. As they were recruited into the French army when the French declared war on Spain, the Croatian ties were noticed and accepted by the fashionable French. The turned-down shirt collar replaced the banned ruffs, and the fine cloths to wrap the collar became the rage. Croatia was unable to recover after the war, but sympathizer King Louis XIV accepted the cravat and started a new trend
News Travels
In the early 1800s, patterned and dyed neckties gained popularity throughout Europe in the military, schools, and among the elite. Nearly half a century later, these ties began to resemble what men wear today
Modern Ties
Over the next century, the necktie gradually slimmed to its current width, based on shirt-collar and lapel size. The first novelty ties were designed by Salvador Dali, whose artwork and illustrations on ties took the art world by storm. After the necktie fashion trail was blazed, men from all sectors continued to express their interests and sense of style by wearing ties that make statements
