How to Select Pet Carriers for Travel:
Pet carriers differ from crates primarily in their size. Crates are larger and typically used strictly for dogs, while small carriers (often with handles) transport small animals like cats. Carriers can be plastic, wicker or any other kind of sturdy material and have openings in the front or on top that close with secure latches. Any time you travel with your small pet, it is essential to bring along a reliable carrier. It's simple to learn to select good pet carriers.
- Instructions
- Select pet carriers that are roomy enough for your pet. The carrier must allow your pet to be able to move about in comfortably. This includes standing up and turning around for both dogs and cats.
- Select carriers that will minimize visual distractions. Carriers that have solid sides and roofs and only a mesh screen in front are best. Visual distractions can upset pets during travel, especially cats. This type of carrier will help keep them calm.
- Pick carriers that are easy for you to carry. A sturdy handle on top of a carrier that is lightweight and not too bulky is best. Some cloth-based pet carriers come with wheels, which makes them easy to pull around an airport or hotel.
- Pick a carrier that will minimize the movements of your pet. While you want a carrier that's big enough for your pet to move around in, a carrier that is too big will encourage your pet to be active, which you don't want on a trip. Keeping the carrier as small as possible while still maintaining minimum movement requirements is ideal, as it will encourage your pet to lie down and relax.
- Select a shoulder carrier for very small animals, such as toy-sized dogs and kittens. The Sherpa Bag is a popular model of shoulder carrier. This will keep your small pet close to you at all times, which will maximize his safety and comfort during travel.
- Choose a carrier that is soft and comfortable for your pet. Soft carriers are easier to bring on airplanes and will make the trip more pleasant for your pet.
How to Buy Pet Carriers:
Often pet owners need a pet carrier. If you have a dog, cat or even a ferret, you are going to need a pet carrier if you go on a trip or even to help get the pet to the veterinarian. There are many different type of pet carriers, so use the following suggestions to help select the proper pet carrier to buy for your pet situation.

- Instructions
- Take into consideration the size of your pet compared to the size of the pet carrier that you are considering to buy. You need to have the pet carrier a comfortable size for your pet. So, measure your pet's height and length and take these with you as you shop for pet carriers.
- Look for a pet carrier that is light weight, but durable. Being made of a material that can be easily cleaned is a big advantage. Having a handle to carry the pet carrier with on the top is really a good feature. Make sure that the pet carrier has proper ventilation and areas where your pet's water and food dishes can be attached in the event they will be in the pet carrier a long time. If you plan to keep your pet in the carrier daily, you will want something that is very sturdy. If you are using the pet carrier to go on an occasional trip to the vet, then a less expensive pet carrier should be ok. If you have a pet that will try to bite, select a pet carrier that has ventilation, but where the openings are covered.
- Purchase a pet carrier for a small pet that may be made of a soft, even washable material. These often resemble purses or pouches for your small pets to carry around with you. This type of pet carrier is not suitable for a large breed dog or animal. Do not use this type of pet carrier for a pet that is prone to be aggression, as many of these are designed where the head of the animal is exposed.
- Shop for a collapsible crate type pet carrier if you have a larger breed dog. Pet carriers for animals this size can weigh a lot and take up a lot of space, so you may want to store these when not using and the collapsible models work best.
- Check with the airline if you plan to take your pet on a flight. You will need to obtain the airline's regulations for pets and pet carriers. In most cases, these should be able to fit under your seat. Also, the pet carrier will have to be able to go through the security screening areas, so keep this in mind when selecting a pet carrier.
- Find pet carriers to buy at most all pet supply stores. Other locations that stock pet carriers are retail merchants such as Walmart, Target and KMart. Some veterinarians will order pet carriers that would be suitable for your particular pet. There are many "boutique type" pet supply stores that will carry the fun, soft-sided pet carriers. You can shop online for many choices. Prices on pet carriers will vary widely depending upon the size, material and quality of the pet carrier.

02-03-2011- Other Thoughts: I had a litter of puppies and I purchased this bag so the owner could carry the pup with her in the cabin of the plane. I put the bag on the floor and unzipped it preparing to put the puppy inside so he could get used to it, but before I could he jumped in on his own and so did his siblings. They played jumping in and jumping out and finally two fell asleep inside it. I left them there to sleep! <br/>The puppies were (8 week old Havanese) 3lbs each and two could fit comfortable. One had plenty of room to share!
