How to Buy Pet Carriers
Often pet owners need a pet carrier. If you have a dog, cat or even a ferret, you are going to need a pet carrier if you go on a trip or even to help get the pet to the veterinarian. There are many different type of pet carriers, so use the following suggestions to help select the proper pet carrier to buy for your pet situation.
Instruction:- Take into consideration the size of your pet compared to the size of the pet carrier that you are considering to buy. You need to have the pet carrier a comfortable size for your pet. So, measure your pet's height and length and take these with you as you shop for pet carriers.
- Look for a pet carrier that is light weight, but durable. Being made of a material that can be easily cleaned is a big advantage. Having a handle to carry the pet carrier with on the top is really a good feature. Make sure that the pet carrier has proper ventilation and areas where your pet's water and food dishes can be attached in the event they will be in the pet carrier a long time. If you plan to keep your pet in the carrier daily, you will want something that is very sturdy. If you are using the pet carrier to go on an occasional trip to the vet, then a less expensive pet carrier should be ok. If you have a pet that will try to bite, select a pet carrier that has ventilation, but where the openings are covered.
- Purchase a pet carrier for a small pet that may be made of a soft, even washable material. These often resemble purses or pouches for your small pets to carry around with you. This type of pet carrier is not suitable for a large breed dog or animal. Do not use this type of pet carrier for a pet that is prone to be aggression, as many of these are designed where the head of the animal is exposed.
- Shop for a collapsible crate type pet carrier if you have a larger breed dog. Pet carriers for animals this size can weigh a lot and take up a lot of space, so you may want to store these when not using and the collapsible models work best.
- Check with the airline if you plan to take your pet on a flight. You will need to obtain the airline's regulations for pets and pet carriers. In most cases, these should be able to fit under your seat. Also, the pet carrier will have to be able to go through the security screening areas, so keep this in mind when selecting a pet carrier.
- Find pet carriers to buy at most all pet supply stores. Other locations that stock pet carriers are retail merchants such as Walmart, Target and KMart. Some veterinarians will order pet carriers that would be suitable for your particular pet. There are many "boutique type" pet supply stores that will carry the fun, soft-sided pet carriers. You can shop online for many choices. Prices on pet carriers will vary widely depending upon the size, material and quality of the pet carrier.
How to Make a Litter Pad for a Pet Carrier?
- Purchase a high quality scoopable litter. Scented may be preferable.
- Locate a pillowcase that you do not need any more. This should be a thin cotton or cotton blend pillowcase. You can also use satin or other fancy fabric, but make sure it is not thick, as the urine/moisture will be absorbed by the fabric first and will spread across the top, which you do not want. Make sure the pillowcase has a tight weave with no holes.
- Measure how wide and long the bottom of the carrier is. If it is large, you may need more than one pillowcase.
- Approximate how much litter you will need to put in the pillowcase in order to make a "mat" that will lie flat on the bottom of the carrier. You want to have enough litter to absorb anything necessary, but if you are carrying it, you will not want to make the carrier too heavy. If it is a cat, 1/2" should be sufficient. If it is a large dog, 3/4" may be necessary.
- Place the appropriate amount into the pillowcase. Flatten it out, folding the top under to try it for size inside the carrier. If you need more or less, make this adjustment and try it again.
- Fold the open end of the pillowcase underneath the litter pad and fasten with Velcro type fasteners or very small safety pins. You can also stitch it closed with a needle and thread.
- Place the pad snugly inside the pet carrier so it cannot slide around. You may wish to place a couple of Velcro type fasteners on the bottom of the carrier and on the bottom of the finished pad to help secure it or place a non-skid mat underneath, but this isn't really necessary.

05-25-2011- Other Thoughts: The cat carrier worked great for our cat. It was semi-flexible on top, which was handy when trying to fit under the design of different airline seats. Plenty of venting, and despite our dogs excessive scratching, it never came open during the flight.

04-21-2011- Other Thoughts: Product is nice, looks great just be aware that this is for a VERY small dog. One month latter she had out grown it. I'm going to be passing it on to a friend and hopefully she can get more use out of it than I did.

03-09-2011- Other Thoughts: We bought one of this Cat Carrier and it worked great. Fit nicely under the seat. There was lots of mesh so she could breathe and see out and there was a nice padded liner.

03-24-2011- Other Thoughts: On the side, this cat carrier bag is cheap, lightweight, and versatile. Side zip-up entry allows the pet to walk into the bag instead of having to be plopped down from above. The roll-up flaps to provide extra ventilation on each side also allow for privacy when needed.

04-02-2011- Other Thoughts: I purchased this bag to transport a puppy I was adopting from a shelter and needed to fly home. The airline's policy is that the dog needs to be able to stand up and turn around. Unfortunately, the bag was too small for the puppy to do that. I was advised that I would be turned away at the airport so I had to return the bag and go with a cargo carrier. Unless your dog is very small, this is a waste. The bag is very sturdy, though, but not worth it if the dog cannot travel in it.
