How to Remove a Ceiling Fan Light Kit:
- Turn power off to the fan at the breaker box
- Remove any lampshades, light bulbs and glass globes that are currently attached to the light fixture
- Carefully remove the screws that secure the light fixture to the ceiling fan. Be sure to support the fixture while removing the screws to ensure that the light kit does not fall unexpectedly
- The light kit will be attached to the fan with two wires. Remove the wire nuts and disconnect the light fixture from the fan
- Using the wire nuts, secure the wires at the fan separately, capping wires off to ensure the do not come into contact with the fan
- Replace the light cap over the wires and secure it with the screws
- Restore power
How to Pick a Ceiling Fan Light Kit:
- Figure out how you want to pick the ceiling fan light kit. You can pick a light kit that is already mounted to the fan -- this is the most convenient option but has the least choices -- or you can pick a light kit that comes with the ceiling fan when you purchase it and which you need to attach yourself. You can also pick a light kit sold completely separate from your ceiling fan. This option gives you the most choices but can be the most difficult to install
- Look into the various types of kit. An uplight kit, for example, is mounted on top of the ceiling fan, meaning the light shines up at the ceiling. A bowl light kit tends to be more energy efficient and is attached below the ceiling fan. The bowl acts as a shade. A branched light kit includes lights that fall from stems or arms. These can face up or down
- Consider the light created by each type. An uplight kit will create a soft light with more ambiance. Bowl light kits create light based on the type of shade attached. For example, a more intricate glass shade can create dazzling light patterns, while a standard clear shade will simply be one central light. The light created by branched light kits depends on the number of stems, usually three or four, and the direction they point
- Check to see that the light kits you're picking from are compatible with the ceiling fan. This is not necessary if you're picking a light kits that's pre-mounted. In many cases, the light kit must be the same brand or come from the same retailer as the ceiling fan. Check with the retailer or manufacturer

03-23-2011- Other Thoughts: I bought 2 of these for my bedrooms & they're nicer than the more expensive fan I installed in my living room. The silver fan blades are very nice looking. Be sure to buy the extension rod if your ceilings are high.

05-17-2011- Other Thoughts: The fan arrived within a few days. The instructions were clear and the parts fit and finish were very good. This was a good value on a 42" fan for smaller rooms. The ceiling mount is flat against the ceiling with no gaps. The fan operates quietly and is very stable.
