How to Clean a Crystal Chandelier:

Your delicate chandelier will glow more brightly without all that dust and grime. Here's how to make it sparkle again
- Set up alternative lighting nearby (since you won't be able to use the chandelier for lighting while you're cleaning it)
- Turn off the chandelier's power at the wall switch. Place a piece of tape over the wall switch so that no one can accidentally turn it on while you're working
- Cover any upward-pointing bulbs with sandwich bags. Secure the bags with rubber bands
- Place a drop cloth below the chandelier
- Mix a solution of one part isopropyl alcohol or ammonia in three parts distilled water. Or, if you don't want to mix your own cleaner, buy a special chandelier cleaner from a lighting retailer. Put some solution in a spray bottle
- Spray every part of the fixture with the cleanser, avoiding wires and other electrical components
- Allow the crystals to drip-dry. If your chandelier is too dirty for this drip-cleaning method, you'll have to hand-wash each individual crystal with the cleaning solution
- Remove the plastic bags from the lights once the crystals have dried, and wipe down light wells and other noncrystal parts with a soft cloth dipped in the cleanser
- Allow the entire fixture to dry overnight before turning its power back on
How to Install a Chandelier
- Installing a chandelier requires attention to detail. Chandeliers are heavier than most other forms of lighting, and can cause substantial injury or damage should they fall from place. Follow these steps to avoid an accident
- Determine the weight of your new chandelier. If it weighs nearly as much as your current light fixture, you don't have to replace the ceiling junction box. However, if the chandelier is heavier, purchase and install a junction box that can support its weight.
- Turn off the power to the circuit where the chandelier will be located. Use a circuit tester to verify the power is off
- Remove the old light fixture. Note how the fixture was installed and mark the wires with tape
- If you determined that a new junction box was necessary, install it now
- Attach the new hardware from the chandelier to the mounting strap. If you find a mounting strap, obtain one and install it.
- Screw the mounting strap to the junction box
- Wire the new chandelier in the same manner as the old light fixture. Connect matching colors (e.g., black to black, white to white). You must remove about a half-inch of insulation from each new wire before attaching it to the ceiling wires
- Once you have twisted the wires from the new chandelier to ceiling wires, twist on wire nuts in a clockwise direction
- To complete the procedure, follow the manufacturer's directions. Chandeliers can slightly vary from model to model, so the final steps of the process will be different
- If you are installing the chandelier in a dining room or kitchen, make sure the chandelier hangs at least 30 inches above any table. The chandelier's diameter should be at least 12 inches narrower than the width of the table
