Directions to Make a Charging Station:

With so many electrical devices, such as cell phones and computers, it's easy to be overwhelmed by device chargers. Many of them look the same, and they're easy to misplace or mix up. Random chargers lying around seem to get in the way, too, causing tripping or other accidents. Make a charging station to centralize chargers and hold devices.

Considerations:

• You can put together a homemade charging station using different designs and items. One thing to keep in mind when you're making a charging station is that you're dealing with electricity. Use safe tools and materials, stay away from water and keep all electrical cords unplugged while working to prevent electrical shock and fire hazards.

Items Needed:

• Gather materials to make a charging station. You'll need a stainless steel breadbox, a drill with a metal bit, a power strip, small rubber gaskets, tape, glue, labels and a pen or fine-point marker. It's a good idea to use a stainless steel breadbox for holding the power strip and electrical cords for your charging station in case of fire.

Drill Holes:

• Drill several aligned holes in the top of the steel breadbox for cell phone and other gadget charger cords. You'll need a big enough circumference for the rubber gaskets to fit into and for cords to slide in and out. Drill a hole in the back of the breadbox large enough for the power strip cord to fit through, so that you can plug it in once you've finished making the charging station. Also drill small holes in the back of the breadbox for heat ventilation.

Put It Together:

• Carefully place the gaskets into all of the holes and watch out for sharp metal around the edges of the holes. Make sure the rubber gaskets cover the hole edges and fit into the holes securely. You might need to apply glue to hold them in place. Put the power strip inside of the breadbox. Pull its cord through the larger hole in the back but don't plug it in yet. Plug each of the charger cords into the power strip and run their cords through the holes in the top of the breadbox. Label each cord above the box so that you'll be able to identify the proper cord later for each gadget. Plug in the power strip and plug cell phones and other gadgets into their chargers.

DIY Charger Station:

It seems every electronic item these days comes with a charger. This often means taking up countless spaces in a power strip and cluttering your desk and nightstand with endless gizmos. However, you can remedy this problem by keeping all of your items charging in one place. By making your own charger station, you reduce clutter and make it easy to locate your gadgets when you need them

• Buy a letter tray that has enough slots and spaces for the items you want to have charged in your charging station. Paint the tray a color of your choosing and allow it to fully dry before moving on.
• Cut strips of felt to the size of each slot of the letter tray. Glue each of the strips to the bottoms of the try openings. You can cover the sides too, if you wish. This will act as protection to your electronics from scratches.
• Plug in all the chargers to your power strip. Cable tie the cords together making a tight cable trunk. Leave several inches from the cable side that plugs into your electronics.
• Flip the letter tray over and cut a small wedge along the edge of each letter slot. Each opening needs to be large enough to fit the charging end of the plug, but small enough so it will not slip out. Use a sharp craft knife to cut the wedge into the felt, too.
• Slip each of the charging plugs into the wedge. Push the cable so it sits snug in the point of the wedge. When ready to charge an electronic, simply plug in like normal and place the electronic into the felted slot.
