925 Sterling silver:
- Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% by weight of silver and 7.5% by weight of other metals, usually copper. The sterling silver standard has a minimum millesimal fineness of 925
The Facts:
- By nature, pure silver is a soft metal and can't be used to produce functional products for everyday use. However, by alloying the pure silver with another metal, most commonly copper, 925 sterling silver is created. When combining 92.5 percent pure silver with 7.5 percent copper, silversmiths then have an affordable, durable medium for jewelry, silverware and gift items that still maintains the shiny, white beauty of pure silver. Other than copper, sterling silver can also be made of zinc, nickel, geranium or platinum
Identification:
- Before buying a piece of silver jewelry or a gift, take a moment to verify the authenticity of the investment. Simply by looking inside a ring,on the clasp of a necklace or on the back of a frame or spoon, you can easily guarantee that you are buying "the real thing." As regulated by the United States' Federal Trade Commission, all silver products that are classified as sterling silver will be inscribed or stamped with the hallmark "925." Items must contain a minimum of 92.5 percent pure silver in order to be called "sterling" by government standards. A professional jeweler will be able to point out these markings
Considerations:
- Silver buyers should be aware that over time, silver pieces will tarnish--especially on items that are left in open air or are frequently touched, such as candlesticks or platters. Most fine jewelers sell silver polishing cloths and silver cleaners especially designed to remove these stains. Some liquid silver cleaning products even recommend leaving your silver jewelry to soak overnight for hassle-free cleaning. By polishing or soaking frequently, you avoid buildup, and your sterling silver maintains its original luster
Caring for Silver Jewelry:
- Sterling silver will polish up by rubbing or buffing it with a soft cotton cloth. A chemically treated cloth, like a Sunshine Cloth, makes the job a lot easier and faster
- Sterling silver dips are fast and easy. However, be careful!
First: many dips will take the color and polish off many gemstones
Second: when using a dip, if you leave the piece in too long, or don't rinse it well enough with fresh water, white residues will be left on the piece when it dries. The residue is difficult to rub or pick off. When using a silver dip, dip the piece quickly in and out of the dip
Then: immediately rinse it in clean water. When the piece dries, buff it with a soft cotton cloth or a Sunshine Cloth. The buffing brings out more of the shine, helps take off any residue left on the piece, and with a Sunshine Cloth, leaves a little bit of a protective anti-tarnish coating on the piece to keep it shiny longer. A dip should only be used when a buffing with a dry cloth doesn't work- Tarnish Shield, or similar lacquer shield, will keep the piece of jewelry shiny until the tarnish wears off. You should be aware that pieces that have been lacquered don't age well, until all the lacquer has worn off. In spots where the lacquer has loosened from the sterling, but not worn off, the silver will tarnish, but you won't be able to buff it
Clean Tarnish From Silver:

- For your badly tarnished jewelry or teapots, etc., here is a easy natural way to clean it. Cover the inside bottom of a glass heat proof dish and place a piece of aluminum foil, shiny side up inside it. Put the tarnished silver in the bottom of the dish and add 1 big tablespoon of baking soda, and then slowly pour boiling water over it until it covers the piece. The tarnish will gradually collect on the aluminum foil and clean the sterling. See my tips below on flatware care. Remove your silver, rinse thoroughly, and polish
- For jewelry and other items, baking soda is better. Put on a paste of baking soda and water. Rub gently and then rinse with water and then polish dry with a soft cloth. If you would rather do this with your flatware, you can, just sprinkle baking soda on a damp cloth and rub it on the silverware until tarnish is gone
- You can also use toothpaste to clean off tarnish. Coat the silver with toothpaste, then run it under warm water, and work it into a foam. Rinse off. For stubborn stains or where there is a lot of hard to reach places, use a soft toothbrush
- For your flatware, first wash in warm water with dish soap. Do not let your hollow handled silverware soak in the water as a combination of heat, water, and detergent may loosen soldering. See more tips below

12-04-2010- Other Thoughts: I bought these for myself and my 3 daughters. They love them and so do I. If you have a small wrist then you wont have a problem, but if your wrist is on the large side. I would not recommend this item. They are inexpensive and I feel they will go over well with the recipient....I highly recommend
