How to Change a Circular Saw Blade:
- There are times when it becomes necessary to change the blade in a circular saw
- In a workshop environment, changing these blades can mean upgrading the blade to a new model or simply interchanging the blade to match the project at hand
- In either case, replacing a circular saw blade can be done in a few easy steps
- Turn off all power to the circular saw and remove the power cord from the wall outlet. Twist tie or tie off the cord to keep it out of the way while changing the blade
- Slide up the protective blade guard to expose the blade. Lay the saw down on a sturdy bench top.
- Clamp the circular saw to the bench top using two bench clamps or any clamp that will hold the unit securely to the bench
- Locate the hole in the saw blade itself. This hole will be drilled all the way through the blade and can accommodate a drill bit or another thin piece of metal or wood
- Place a drill bit through the hole in the saw blade to secure the blade from moving. Many newer circular saw models come equipped with a blade lock feature that can be employed to stop blade movement
- Attach a wrench or socket to the circular saw blade retaining bolt in the center of the blade. This bolt attaches the blade to the saw itself. Remove bolt and set aside
- Remove the saw blade and place the new blade in its place. Replace the blade bolt and tighten securely to the saw
How to Remove a Circular Saw Blade:
- Whether you are changing out an old, worn blade for a new one or merely taking off the blade temporarily for cleaning, knowing how to dismantle your circular saw is essential to proper maintenance
- Fortunately, most models are designed with ease of removal in mind, and are even equipped with their own special tools to remove the retaining nut and collar allowing the saws to be disassembled, reassembled and ready to cut in minutes
- Turn off your circular saw and disconnect it from its power source before removing the blade. Place your unplugged circular saw on a sturdy table or work bench with the blade facing upwards
- Lift up the spring-loaded blade guard so the the bottom of the saw blade is exposed. With a leather glove protecting your hand from the sharp saw teeth, grip the sides of the blade and hold it in place. Some models are equipped with a special locking pin which can be used instead to keep the blade from rotating
- Loosen the retaining nut in the center of the blade by turning it to the left using the circular saw key provided by the manufacturer or an adjustable wrench
- Remove the retaining nut and slide off the collar from underneath. Place the two pieces in a safe place where you will not lose them
- Lift the blade straight off of its axle
