How to Grind Coffee:

    • Select a grinder. The electric single blade grinders are effective but noisy. They chop up the bean, sometimes producing an uneven grind, and the heat from the blade causes the beans to heat up, losing some of flavor. Burr grinders are like the older grinders, where you fill the hopper with the beans and they pass through the grinders one time. The grind is uniform and adjustments are easier.
    • Choose between electric and non-electric. Electric is fast but noisy and lacks the hands-on charm of grinding your own beans. The hand grinders take more time and are available in a wide variety of price ranges. Whichever one you decide on, look for the ability to adjust the grind for different brewing methods.
    • Pick the freshest coffee bean you can find. Look for the roasting date, rather than the expiration date. Coffee beans are best if used within one week of roasting. The beans need to be stored in airtight containers, rather than the bins that most stores use. Coffee beans emit carbon dioxide for about 2 weeks after they are roasted, causing their packaging to expand, so if you see vacuum packaging that conforms tightly to the beans, they are probably not fresh.
    • Adjust the coffee grinder to the proper grind. Most hand grinders have two adjusting nuts on the handle shaft. By loosening the top one, you are able to adjust the bottom one to the proper grind and then re-tighten the top nut to keep the setting secure. With the whirly grinder, you have to keep an eye on the grind and continue until it chops the beans to the desired size.
    • Decide on the fineness of the grounds based on the brewing process you are going to use. If you are going to expose the grounds to hot water for a short duration, you need a fine ground. The longer the exposure, the coarser the ground needs to be. If you grind the beans too fine for the brewing method, you expose too much of the surface to hot water, and the result is a bitter taste. However, if the grind is too coarse, the coffee may be weak and watery.

00:00:00 05-11-2011 My first and last grinder Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: This grinder is quiet compared to others i've heard, the grinds are perfectly consistent, the beans flow through smoothly, and there are no static problems at all with the glass cup.

I mainly use flavoured coffee beans which i've heard tend to clog grinders quickly but in 3 months i've never had a problem, never had it clog up with grounds, and i've never had to take it apart and clean it (although i do tap the side a few times before removing the grounds)

00:00:00 04-29-2011 Skeptical Believer L Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: What I specifically like about the Bodum are all the little things. The rubberized casing makes for a nice tactile feel along with sure grip taking it in and out of the cupboard. The glass coffee catcher eliminates all static and makes for a clean machine. The variable grind setting is easily marked. The simple push button and timed operation helps make every cup the same great taste as the previous one. The rubber cover for the coffee catcher keeps it in place snugly along with eliminating coffee getting everywhere. Even the cord holder has been thought through to allow you to have just the right amount of cord out at a time.

00:00:00 04-19-2011 Simple and Consistent Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: This is our first coffee grinder ever. I purchased it after reading the reviews and was aware of the 20second grind time with the subsequent 5 minute cool down. My husband is the coffee drinker in the house and only drinks 1-3 cups a day which he makes one at a time in his Keurig coffee maker. The grind capacity is not an issue at all for us. Once you determine the grind time you need per cup at your preferred coarseness (which takes only a use or two)it is as simple as pushing a button. I do recommend taking 90 seconds to read the instructions, then enjoy. It is consistent and essentially mess-free. My husband loves it, and it may turn me into a coffee drinker too.

00:00:00 04-06-2011 GOOD Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: There are several reviews that offer advice on dealing with this issue though, my favorite being "just brew a half pot at a time." It's still not perfectly convenient, but if I need a full pot, that's what I'll do. That said, if you constantly brew full pots of coffee, then this grinder might not be for you.

00:00:00 03-23-2011 Awesome upgrade over blade grinder Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: I'd been using the same blade grinder for years and had never really been happy with the results. Coffee was always inconsistent and unless the planets were aligned, usually tasted like bleh. So I got used to going to Starbucks every morning for my brew.

00:00:00 03-09-2011 Coffee Grinder Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: PS FYI, you get about 5 rounded tbsp(fine grind)at the max time setting. If you must have a longer time setting buy another grinder for more money that won't grind your beans perfect like this one does.

00:00:00 02-09-2011 Awesome Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: This has everything going for it, quality build, no static in catch jar, jar fits tightly in unit with very little leakage, perfect grind consistently. Once you know the grind for a certain bean and the quantity needed for your strength your set up until you buy different beans. Push the units power button(orange lite comes on) or just leave it on all the time. Press the timer/start button you have already preset and BOOM perfect grind and amount every time. It's quiet in comparison to others I've had too.

00:00:00 01-25-2011 Excellent for everyday use Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: The flexible lid of the glass cup creates a seal with the grinder, ensuring grounds only go into the cup and not all over the place. Inevitably there will be grounds stuck up in the burrs when the machine shuts off, so if you don't give the machine a little tap before pulling the grounds cup out, some grounds may fall out inadvertantly. I see this as a consequence of using a burr grinder, and not this specific model.
