Using a Hand Crank Coffee Grinder

    Hand Coffee Grinder

    • If you're considering buying a manual coffee grinder, or maybe if you got a great deal on one at an auction or garage sale, you might be wondering how to use it. If so, you've come to the right place for the answers you need
    • First off, it might be helpful to learn that coffee grinders come in two different types. One type chops the java beans up by using two steel blades. The blades turn in a circle and chop the beans. The other type grinds the whole beans up by using burrs that work together to do the job. Both the steel blades and the burrs are adjustable from fine to coarse settings. It doesn't matter what type of hand crank coffee grinder you might have. The basic instructions are still pretty much the same. But, the burr type is said to be easier to use and produces a more evenly ground coffee
    • To start with, make sure your coffee grinder is thoroughly clean, especially if you bought it used. You don't want any contaminants getting into your ground coffee. You can remove some parts and safely wash them with hot, soapy water. Usually, there are screws on the top that hold the internal parts in place. If the outside base is wood, just use a damp cloth to wipe it off. Or, use a wood cleaner. Do not immerse it into water or you can ruin the wood! Dry the machine and the parts thoroughly and reassemble them again
    • Then, before you even start grinding your coffee beans, you'll need to adjust your machine. To do this, find the adjuster which is located on the top. Gently turn it in a counter-clockwise direction until it won't turn any more. Now, gently turn the adjuster back the other way while you turn the handle. You'll hear the steel blades or the burrs rattling against each other inside. Stop turning the adjuster when you don't hear the blades or burrs making a noise anymore. (You should make a half turn or so when this happens.) Now, add the coffee beans into the opening on the top so they fall into the receptacle. As you turn the crank clockwise, the blades or burrs will grind the whole coffee beans up. The ground beans will then fall into a drawer below. To remove the coffee, all you have to do is simply remove the drawer
    • You don't have to wash the internal parts of your hand crank coffee grinder everytime after you use it. In between washings, you can simply add a cup or so of rice to the receptacle. Then, turn the crank and the rice will clean the steel blades and burrs. Then, dispose of the rice and your machine is ready to use! An added bonus is that the rice will help to sharpen the blades and burrs too

Great little Hand Grinder
00:00:00 10-20-2010
Bought this for my wife that drinks 1 mug of coffee a day. (I don't drink coffee) Couldn't be happier. She uses it to grind her beans to course setting for a fresh french pressed coffee every morning. This little hand grinder is a blast to grind with. And I think it will last.

This is a great tiny hand-grinder!
00:00:00 08-23-2010
Once I bought a Freiling french press, I became a coffee snob. My coffee is ground fresh each morning and my morning mugfull is made immediately. However, I live in hurricane country. I needed a manual coffee grinder for use during blackouts and while traveling. I ordered another grinder from Dinodirect and had to return it (thank you Dinodirect for making that easy.) Size was important. I don't have much room in my suitcase or cupboard in which to store another coffee implement. This grinder is small but grinds my coffee just perfectly. This is a great little manual grinder!

Small size Big on taste
00:00:00 07-28-2010
Very Happy with this grinder. Can't believe how much better my coffee taste using this grinder compared to my blade grinder. Perfect for one or two people and will be very handy to take traveling. I couldn't see myself spending over $ 200 on a electric grinder, so I opted for this and I am glad I did.

works well, so-so build construction
00:00:00 07-20-2010
This grinder's appearance was not as stunning as I hoped it would be. It is wood and built fairly well but the bronze plaque on front looks cheap. The grinder itself works well and is adjustable, for me it is a display piece.

I like it a lot
00:00:00 06-22-2010
This grinder is pretty good. It takes me no more than a minute to grind enough beans for an eight cup percolator. It takes a little fiddling to get the right textures for the percolator but after you get it you're set. It seems to be constructed pretty well. It looks like it has a plastic grinder but it works just fine.

Good mill, good price
00:00:00 05-31-2010
I picked this mill up so that when the power goes out, or when camping, I can grind coffee beans to keep my need for coffee satisfied. For those addicted to caffeine, it would be a good idea to include the this mill in your "coffee kit", along with a few pounds of beans, a water heating solution, a french press and of course, a few extra gallons of water. This mill produces enough ground coffee bean for a full pot/press of coffee with one bean filling. The cut of the bean is perfect for french press. The quality of the mill is very good for the price.

Decorative grinder
00:00:00 05-18-2010
This grinder is nice and it makes a good decorative piece. As others have mentioned, it is a bit delicate. I use it a couple times a week for a small pot of coffee. I use a coarse grind and it works well.

Very decorative little thing
00:00:00 04-13-2010
I was looking for a coffee grinder for some time and finally have chosen this one because it seemed to be quiet and unexpensive. After the package arrived it turned out I was right- it is quiet and also beautifull, made with nice, dark wood. Looks great on the shelf.
