How to Use a SATA Hard Drive on an IDE Motherboard

For several years following the late 1980s, IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) technology reigned supreme in the field of storage equipment. IDE was once the hard drive standard, and further development through the years allowed IDE hard drives to handle increased capacity and speed. In the early 2000s, however, SATA technology was developed. SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) outperformed IDE's technology, with the first models transferring at speeds of 150MB per second (compared to the IDE's 133MB per second). Despite SATA's better performance, however, some computer manufacturers still continued to produce IDE devices, due to their more affordable prices. Therefore, some desktop computers manufactured in the new millennium still have IDE-only motherboards. But due to technological advancements, it is now nonetheless possible to use a SATA hard drive on a motherboard that only supports IDE

    • Verify that you have enough IDE drive slots free to install another hard drive. Many computers only come with two IDE slots: one for the main hard drive and one for the CD or DVD drive. If all of your IDE slots are occupied, you will either need to: (a) sacrifice the use of one of the drives; (b) connect multiple drives on a single ribbon cable (the cable must have three connectors, rather than two); or (c) connect a PCI-adapter containing additional IDE slots
    • Purchase an IDE-to-SATA motherboard adapter. A SATA motherboard adapter will allow you to hook up your new drive to the IDE motherboard by occupying an empty IDE slot. Some adapters will also come with a power cable and a data cable. Check the specifications prior to purchase to make sure the adapter is compatible with your CPU and OS
    • Attach the SATA motherboard adapter to the free IDE slot. Make sure you have powered the computer down completely, removed all external cords and are wearing an anti-static wrist-strap, so as not to damage the computer
    • Power on the computer and configure the SATA adapter, if necessary. Some computer may auto-detect the device, but for others, it may be necessary to install special software in order to make the computer recognize the adapter. This software should come packaged with your adapter
    • Once your computer recognizes the adapter, power down your computer. Connect one end of the power cable and one end of the data cable to the SATA adapter. Connect the other ends to the SATA motherboard. Screw the drive into a free drive bay
    • Configure the drive, as instructed in your hard drive's instruction manual. This process will vary, based upon the hard drive's manufacturer

    Tips & Warnings

    • If you are not sure where the IDE slots are, follow the ribbon cable (a wide, flat cables with ridges) from the hard drive to the motherboard. The place that the ribbon cable plugs into on the motherboard is the IDE slot

iDE / Sata converter
05:48:53 04-12-2013
Packaging looks good, but that is where it stops suddenly.

I ordered two of these, but neither work. There is little in the way of instructions.

Whilst this item looks to be useful to get older drives working on newer systems, i could not get one to be recognised by my pc. I would not recommend this product

Wouldn't work for me
06:56:08 02-01-2013
Would have been good if it had worked

I was unable to get it to work on either of two machines.

There are pictures on the card showing SATA-IDE and IDE-SATA, but no indication which represents the cable and which the drive. I tried both but my motherboard could not recognise either way.

it's a great little gadget

Mixed results, but worth it for what it can do
00:00:00 01-09-2011
So the item is fine, with the potential limitation indicated. And as others have noted, it is relatively flimsy; so attach the cables to the adapter first, then the adapter to the back of the drive.

Excellent Product. Works Amazign!

Beautifully made, great quality control and wonderful product! Works great with an older 200GB harddrive!

None really, unless you don't know how to use the jumpers to switch operating mode, but it comes in the instructions as well, so its pretty simple to use!

Easy installation, and no drivers needed.

Awesome for reloading an old copy of XP on a Sata drive
00:00:00 11-23-2010
I needed to reload XP on my computer but I have an old windows XP disk that doesn't recognize the SATA interface on my motherboard. I just hooked my sata drive up to the IDE part of the board then loaded windows onto the drive. Once I did so I unplugged the adapter and mounted the drive in it's SATA slot and I was up and running. Next time my system gets nailed with a virus or gets massively bogged down, I can just reload the image and 30 minutes later I'm back to the fresh install again. <br/>Then I used an open source program called clonezilla to make a backup of my hard drive so I won't have to go through this again. So I only needed it for a short time but the adapter was just what I needed.

Great little adapter at a super price

For anyone needing to adapt an older drive box that uses ide to use SATA, this is the product to use. It even has a peel and stick backing to keep it in place during installation.

It does work
00:00:00 10-13-2010
This product does do what it is suppose to do . The (plus) my Sata drive now adapts to my IDE board . (Delta) There is no way to secure the adapter to the drive. One end on the adapter plugs into the sata fitting on the hard drive but the other end is left unbalanced and I found that to be a problem. If you only have one drive this is a great product but to those that have a desire to use more than one you might find that it is better to by the drive that works with you board.
