"Cosplay" is short for "costume play," a hobby largely practiced among anime and sci-fi enthusiasts. • The term itself is generally attributed to artist Nov Takahashi, who coined it at a Southern California science fiction convention in 1984. In some cases, they act out scenes or scenarios from the worlds they are emulating or engage in free-form role-playing while pretending to be the characters they are dressed as. For instance, when Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" films appeared, the cosplay community witnessed an upswing in players dressing as Middle Earth characters. And when "The Dark Knight" became a huge hit in the summer of 2008, characters from the film began appearing more often... particularly Heath Ledger's unique take on the Joker.

How to be a Cosplayer:

• To be a cosplayer you first need a costume. You can make your costume, either by sewing or by putting it together from already made pieces
