About Cross Stitch Craft Kits:
Cross-stitching has been around for centuries, and cross-stitch kits offer crafters an affordable way to enjoy this form of embroidery. Cross-stitch patterns can be used on pillows, blankets, wall hangings and even holiday ornaments. Whether you are creating a gift for someone else or a family heirloom, you will find that creating a cross-stitch project is both satisfying and relaxing.

- History
- The history of cross-stitch began when Catherine of Aragon brought a Spanish embroidery technique known as blackwork to England in the 16th century. This coincided with the emergence of cross-stitch patterns in the folk art of Eastern Europe, where floral and geometric patterns that are still used today originated. This led to the invention of the "samplers," works that showcased various stitches and were passed from embroiderer to embroiderer. The invention of printing led to the modern cross-stitch kits with printed patterns and instructions. Interest in embroidery declined during World War I and World War II and increased again in the 1960s.
- Function
- Cross-stitch kits give crafters an easy way to design a piece of embroidery using the cross-stitch technique. The main stitch used in this technique is the cross-stitch, which involves creating an "x" shape using embroidery floss. However, cross-stitch designs typically use a variety of stitches, including the half-cross stitch, French knots, backstitches and various floral stitches to complete the design. Cross-stitch kits come with a pattern, evenweave embroidery fabric, a needle and the necessary embroidery floss.
- Types
- There are two main types of cross-stitch kits currently available. Counted cross-stitch kits come with a paper design pattern and a blank evenweave fabric. The embroiderer uses the pattern and floss to create the design on the fabric. The other type is a preprinted cross-stitch kit, which has the pattern stamped on the fabric. The embroiderer then covers the preprinted design with floss using the basic cross-stitch stitches. Many beginners prefer the stamped cross-stitch kits because they do not require counting.

- Benefits
- You can create a cross-stitch piece without buying a cross-stitch kit. Free patterns can be found online, or you can purchase a pattern book with many similar patterns in it. The benefit of using a cross-stitch kit is the fact that you have everything you need to begin the project, including the correct colors of embroidery floss. By buying everything separately, you run the risk of not having access to a color that you need to complete the design.
- Considerations
- If you purchase a cross-stitch kit, you will need a few other items before you can begin your design. An embroidery hoop is essential, as it allows you to draw the embroidery fabric taut while you work the thread to create the design. You will also need a small pair of sharp scissors. When the project is complete take it to a framing store, because they can stretch it and frame it correctly to ensure that it does not sag.
- Expert Insight
- If you are just starting with cross-stitching, look for a kit that has a preprinted pattern. This will make your first attempt much more enjoyable, because you will eliminate the need to count, which often leads to mistakes. This way you can learn the basic stitches with less frustration. Remember, cross-stitch is fairly flexible as an embroidery style. Just keep your stitches facing the same direction, follow the pattern and you will be able to create a beautiful piece of artwork.
How to Finish Counted Cross Stitch:

- Step One: Start from the top left of the stitch, then bring the needle through from the bottom, holding the tail at the back of the thread. Leave about an inch (2.5 cm) on the back for an anchor if not using the loop start method
- Step Two: Bring the thread down to the lower right corner
- Step Three: Then back up through the upper right and down through the lower left, forming an X. Each time you should pull the thread all the way through so that it is flush with the fabric surface
- Step Four: Start your next stitch so it uses two of the same holes as the picture
- Step Five: Repeat, making sure your stitches overlap your anchor thread on the back of the fabric

05-20-2011- Other Thoughts: I absolutely love this Counted Cross Stitch. I've been working on it for a long time because I only pick up my projects every now and then but, it's just gorgeous. I'm very picky about what cross stitch patterns I will work, I don't like ones that look like bad resolution on a picture. I like them to look almost real and this one does just that!

05-30-2011- Other Thoughts: This Tea Cup Cross Stitch kit is just as beautiful as the picture!!! If you really enjoy cross stitching, and can look upon this as a journey, then you'll love this kit. However, it is not for the faint of heart. It took me about a year and a half to finish, and like all Gold Collection kits, it is VERY involved. This is one of my favorite projects that I've finished, and I can't wait to mat it and hang it up in my house. This is a beautiful kit, and when you finish, you'lll have a true sense of accomplishment.

06-30-2011- Other Thoughts: The Cross Stitch Kit arrived in perfect condition, and its a wonderful product to make. I would suggest buying it for a girl, not a boy as the colors are more feminine than they appear on the image and it includes a sparkle filimint that a girl would more appreciate

05-12-2011- Other Thoughts: I ordered this Counted Cross Stitch not really knowing what to expect. I received it and wow! I was most impressed with the way the threads were sorted. The guide is pretty complicated so this definately isn't a kit for beginners. I personally have never combined different color threads to cross stitch with and its crazy keeping track of it. However, I am seeing how beautiful the pattern is coming out and how lifelike it looks. Only 25% complete wtih it, but it comes with everything except for the hoop. I wasn't crazy about the needle included, I prefer one of my own. And the actual fabric that you stitch is pretty stiff, but all in all well worth the money.
