How to Select the Proper Clipper Blades?

Using clipper blades is a common method of grooming your dog. However, not every clipper blade is appropriate for every type of dog. Learn how to choose the best clipper blade for your furry friend.

Codos Grooming Tools Ceramics Pet Clipper Blade for CP-7800 8000 8600 5300

    • Examine the hair texture. Run your fingers through your dog's hair to determine the thickness. Different hair textures, such as coarse hair, will require different blade types. Use a size 7 skip tooth blade, for example, on dogs with coarse hair
    • Measure the size of your dog. Weigh your dog on a scale. If the dog weighs 65 to 100 lbss, the dog is of the giant variety. If it weighs 25 to 65 lbs., your dog is of the standard variety. Miniature varieties may weigh up to 12 lbs. Different-sized dogs require different types of clippers. Use a size 4 skip tooth blade for smaller dogs, and a blade size T-84 for larger dogs
    • Determine the type of trim. Consider the reasons for trimming your dog. If you are trimming your pooch for sanitary reasons, you will need different clippers than for a complete shave, for example. If you are cutting your dog's body hair, rather than his face or legs, use a skip tooth or full tooth blade. For trimming the face, neck and head, use non-skip-tooth blades

How to Use Clippers on a Pet?

Trimming your pet's hair involves the use of clippers that are right for the type of pet you have and the type of coat your pet has. The current length of the coat will also help you determine the size of the clipper blade to use. Move the pet clippers in short strokes and in one direction for a more even cut. For best results, choose clippers for pets that are relatively quiet. Noisy clippers may frighten your pet.

    Ceramic Blade

    • Begin by brushing out your pet's hair to remove any mats and tangles. In "The Simple Guide to Grooming Your Dog," authors Eve Adamson and Sandy Roth advice holding the hair at the root to work out a tangle, either with a slicker brush or a mat comb. Bathe and dry your pet
    • Place your pet's head in a noose to keep it steady. If your pet is a dog or a smaller animal, it is practical to place it on an elevated surface, such as a table. This reduces the amount of bending necessary. The noose will also stop your pet from falling off the table
    • Choose a clipper size and blade that is right for your pet's hair. The shorter the teeth on the blade, the shorter the cut
    • Trim the hair on the back and sides of your dog. Run the clipper in one direction, starting from the head and following the direction of the growth of the hair. Remove the noose so you can run the clipper over the neck, under the chin and down the throat. Replace the noose
    • Place your pet's ear flat on one hand. Run the clipper gently over the back of the ear a few times, always in the same direction. Repeat for the other ear
    • Run the clipper down the sides of each leg. Lift one leg up and trim the hair on the underbelly
    • Switch to a smaller blade that is appropriate for your pet's face, and trim the area between your pet's eyes. Also trim the nose, sides of the face and inner edges of the ears
    • Trim under the tail. Hold the tail up and trim around the anal area, making the hair as short as possible

    Pet Clipper

    • Stop and check your clipper occasionally. Clippers heat up during use and will cause your pet some discomfort if it is close to the skin

    Sharpen Dog Clippers Dog Grooming

Dog owners need to have a variety of grooming accessories on hand to keep their pet healthy and clean. Dog clippers (also known as dog shears) are used to trim and manage a dog's fur. Proper trimming with dog clippers ensures that the animal is free of matted hair, and it also makes regular grooming easier. Occasionally, dog clippers may need to be sharpened. Learning how to do it will keep your pet looking his best.

    • Lightly tap the dog clippers to shake out excess hair. Run the clippers under a heavy stream of water to rinse out the inner gears and clean out any fur that has collected over time. If you're using electric dog clippers, use a brush (such as an old toothbrush) to clean the blades. The difficulty in grooming your dog may arise because the shears need to be cleaned, not sharpened. Most home users should never need to have to sharpen their dog clippers unless the shears are used heavily, such as at an animal shelter or in a professional dog-grooming shop
    • Contact a local dog-grooming salon. Get a reference for a professional clipper-sharpening service. Dog clippers need to be professionally serviced. You cannot sharpen dog clippers at home using traditional methods of blade sharpening (e.g. a knife sharpener). After dog clippers are sharpened, they also need to be adjusted and re-tightened to ensure that they will work efficiently
    • Send the dog clippers to the professional sharpening service if you are using manual, scissor-like shears. If you use electric dog clippers, see Step 4 for how to sharpen them. Before choosing a dog-clipper sharpener for manual dog shears, get cost quotes from several service providers to determine which is the cheapest. Be sure to factor in the time it will take (some sharpeners can provide same-day service, while others may take weeks) and the cost of shipping if you are using an out-of-town sharpening service
    • Call the original manufacturer of the dog clippers if you own electric clippers. Electric clippers often require blade replacements, which are available from the manufacturer or from a local parts supplier. Get a cost estimate. Also, consider simply ordering the new replacement part and replacing the dog-clipper blades yourself, rather than sending the entire dog clipper to the manufacturer for servicing
    • Keep the dog-clipper blades sharp by never grooming a dirty dog or a dog with large amounts of dust or grime in his fur. The little pieces of debris can quickly dull the blades on your dog clipper

    NOTE:

There are several reasons for you to want to trim your dog; it's summertime and you want your dog to beat the heat, or he got into something he wasn't supposed to, or your pooch's hair style just needs some sprucing up. There are a lot of options for dog-owners who don't want to take their pets to the groomer.

    Tools:

    • There are two major tools when trimming your dog: clippers and scissors. Both of these can be purchased at any department store or online. Clippers are the most important buy, as you wouldn't want to try grooming the whole dog with scissors. Before you spring to buy the cheapest brand, consider if you'd really be getting your money's worth. If you plan on being your dog's own, personal groomer, then you may want to buy a more expensive brand, which will likely perform better and last longer. If you just want to try out the grooming scene, then you're safe buying something less expensive
    • You can just use a pair of scissors you have laying around your house, or you can buy scissors specifically for hair cutting. In addition to regular scissors, the use of thinning shears (the scissors with teeth) can assist you in making the cut look even and professional

    Where to Start:

    • First and foremost, make sure your clipper blades are oiled. You can buy this oil at stores that carry clippers. Oiling will help immensely with extending the life of your clippers, and getting a good, consistent cut. While the clippers are running, turn them facing down and drop two to four drops of oil on the blades. Shake off the excess oil, as it can run into the motor and damage your clippers
    • Begin clipping from head to tail. According to groomer Kathy Salzberg, you should start at the back of the neck, and guide the clippers until you reach the back legs. Continue doing this until your dog's back is completely cut, and then move on to the legs, tail and ears

    Considerations:

    • Salzberg suggests always cutting in the direction of the hair growth, while other groomers prefer to go "against the grain." Just keep in mind that going against hair growth will cut the hair shorter, while going with the hair growth can aid in a more even cut. Salzberg also reminds people to check the temperature of the blades frequently. Clipper blades can get hot, which causes "clipper burn." Periodically check the clippers on your forearm, as you would a baby bottle
    • To extend the life of your clippers, make sure to clean them after every use. Getting the grease and the hair out of the clippers allows the tool to work the way it was intended, and also helps to prevent rust, which is detrimental to cutting properly

This blade works great for a longer field cut. I have used it on my two Aussies. Cuts like butter when used with the clippers. Does a great finish cut, highly recommend.

This length blade is a good all-around blade...it leaves just enough hair on your dog without getting close like the #10 does, and you don't have to mess around with the attachments (which I find to be a pain really).
