How to Build a Toy Sailboat
- Taking into account the drying time for the sealant, this sailboat should take a novice no more than two days to make. - Things You'll Need
- 2-inch-by-4-inch-by-81/2-inch block of spruce
- Pencil
- Jigsaw
- Drill press
- Dowel rod, 1/4 inch by 81/2 inches
- Waterproof epoxy
- Dowel rod, 1/4 inch by 41/2 inches
- Polyurethane
- Scissors
- Canvas
- Sandpaper
- Instructions
- Lay the 2-inch-by-4-inch piece of spruce flat on a table. This will be the body and deck of the sailboat. With a pencil, mark where the tapered end of the boat will be
- Using a jigsaw, cut the spruce along the line you sketched for the bow. Then use the jigsaw to angle the sides of the boat so they are slightly more narrow on the bottom than on the top
- Use sandpaper to smooth the edges and corners of the boat
- Use a drill press to drill a hole 1-inch deep and 1/4-inch wide. The hole should be in the center of the boat, 3 inches from the tip of the bow
- Dab the end of the 81/2-inch dowel rod with waterproof epoxy and insert it into the hole you just drilled. This will be the mast. Allow it time to dry
- Dab the end of the 41/2-inch dowel rod into waterproof epoxy and attach it to the mast approximately 11/2 inches above the deck, so it runs perpendicular to the mast and parallel to the deck. When attached, it will point out over the long end of the deck. This will be the boom. You may need to clamp the boom to the mast while it is drying
- Seal the boat with polyurethane and allow time to dry
- Cut a triangle section of canvas that will fit in the space between the boom and the mast. This will be the sail. Line the sides of the sail with waterproof glue and attach it to the boom and mast. Allow time to dry
