Disposable Vs. Rechargeable Batteries:

Batteries power almost every portable device in existence. When looking at batteries to use, you may elect to use either disposable batteries or rechargeable batteries in your devices

• Battery Life - Disposable batteries are batteries with only one charge. After the charge is spent, they must be disposed of. Rechargeable batteries, however, can be recharged when spent
• Prevalence - Most electrical devices can use both disposable and rechargeable batteries. However, certain audio players and phones have their own batteries that are rechargeable

• Advantage: Pollution, Power and Durability. Lithium pollutes less than other batteries and last longer than those made of nickel or lead. • Disadvantage: Not Rechargeable. Lithium batteries cannot be recharged. Once the battery runs out, it has to be replaced. When lithium batteries are used in large number, the fact that they are not rechargeable can add to the cost. These batteries can also be difficult to replace if they are embedded in electronics and may necessitate professional repair, or even replacement of the whole electronic item
• Disadvantage: Can Be Dangerous. Leaks within the appliances they are used in can also cause major problems such as the appliance getting overheated and igniting. For example, in 2006 Dell computer company had to recall a batch of laptops because their lithium batteries were found to be susceptible to leaks and were a fire hazard as a result.

For example, during collection, processing or disposal of large numbers of lithium batteries, the batteries could come into close contact with each other and cause friction. This can lead to rupture and eventually an explosion. Even if explosion doesn't occur, when lithium batteries come into close contact with each other, they can release fumes, vapor or toxic gases into the environment. Lithium can also corrode when it comes into contact with water. When corroded lithium is stored in storage facilities, the result can be a potentially dangerous release of hydrogen gas
