How to Make Homemade Dog Chew Toys?

For many dogs, chewing up things around the house is their favorite hobby. They will chew shoes, furniture and doors if they don't have special chew toys available. Avoid this decor nightmare by making some custom chew toys for your special dog. Homemade dog toys are less expensive than store bought varieties, and you can create a varied collection so that your furry friend can have a toy for every room in the house.Fetching Flyer
- Slip an old tennis ball into a very long knee sock. Use the longest sock that you can find that is made from knitted material, not nylon hose.
- Tie a knot in the sock very close to the tennis ball, to encase the ball in the sock toe. Tie another knot close to the first one. Continue making a series of knots all along the sock until you reach the sock opening. Tie this closed with a final knot.
- Soak the knotted sock with enclosed ball with water, then wring out as much water as possible. Put the sock in the freezer for at least one hour. Allow your chew toy to freeze solid. Your dog will chew the frozen sock, and will be used to playing with it by the time it thaws.
Afraid Not
- Cut a piece of very thick rope 12 inches long. Choose rope that is at least 3/4 inches thick, and use cotton rope instead of nylon.
- Tie a very thick knot at each end of the rope. Tie the same knot over and overuntil it is a big and bulbous mass with a short end of rope sticking out of it.
- Place the rope through a load of laundry and into the dryer. You can wait until you have a load of laundry ready to go, as the rope with knots won't hurt your clothes to wash with it. Put the knotted rope into the dryer and allow it to completely dry. The knots will fray at the ends of the rope, making the chew toy even more attractive to your dog.

05-18-2011- Other Thoughts: My dog and I LOVE this chew toy. It lasts virtually forever. Cooper is a 130lb Bullmastiff and she's had her Nylabone Chew Ring for over a year. We've tried the Nylabone chew toy in the bone shape, but it eventually gets chewed down and becomes a choking hazard. Since this is ring-shaped, your dog can chew forever and it won't get smaller! Beware though, if your dog is a strong chewer, the smooth texture becomes sharp. We haven't noticed her mouth bleeding, but since Cooper also likes to carry her ring and toss it in the air, she sometimes scratches us with the sharp edges. She likes to fetch her ring too.

05-13-2011- Other Thoughts: When my Labradoodle was a puppy he chewed through puppy toys in a minute - that's when I knew I was in trouble. We've managed to keep him occupied with toys but finding those indestructible ones can be expensive. He's had this chew ring now for about a month and while he's getting through it, it's taking him awhile. We usually debate toys of whether he could destroy it in the number of minutes - this one lasting a month is great.

05-25-2011- Other Thoughts: This product is made in the USA which means there are no concerns with toxic ingredients. The shape is ideal since there is no need to be concerned with choking hazards when they worry it down. My two dogs who agree on nothing else agree on this: love the rings!

06-14-2011- Other Thoughts: I have 5 dogs, and they all simply LOVE this ring. It lasts quite a while, the first one lasted almost a year. Good for dogs that chew through toys, it's harder for them to chew on/grasp (no corners to focus on) but still keeps their interest because they have to try to figure out the best way to chew on it.
