How to Wash Dog Hair From Clothes:
- Pat clothing often have a fabric-softener "dryer sheet." The anti-static nature of the sheet attracts stray hairs. Some hairs will appear on the sheet. Others will be neutralized, making them easier to brush off
- Brush clothing with a lint brush to catch hair neutralized by the dryer sheet
- Roll a lint roller over affected clothing if hair remains. Tear off the adhesive paper once it is full and continue until lint roller remains clean. Alternately, roll several pieces of masking tape around your hand and pat the garment. Replace tape when it is full of dog hair
- Inspect fasteners. If Velcro closures are present on a garment, vigorously rub both sides with a tooth brush. Scrub in one direction only, to avoid re-contamination. Pick remaining hairs in the bristled hook side with tweezers or a crochet hook
- Launder the garment using the recommended settings and detergents for the fabric. Remaining dog hair easily embeds in soft garments, such as flannel or fleece, so eliminate them from the wash load. Instead, wash garment with abrasive low-pile fabrics, such as denim jeans
- Dry affected garments in the dryer after you complete the laundering. Include several dryer sheets. Their anti-static nature will attract remaining dog hair
How to Keep Your Outside Dog Warm in the Winter:
- Get a doghouse that is the right size. It should be just large enough for your dog to stand up in and turn around. Doghouses that are too big allow body heat to escape
- Place warm, dry bedding into the doghouse. Straw and wood shavings are inexpensive options if rodents aren't a problem. Otherwise use a good dog bed that you replace every year. Don't use old blankets -- they can get damp and not dry out
- Keep the doghouse dry. Elevate the floor several inches so moisture does not collect inside. Frozen moisture can melt when your dog lies down and later freeze to his fur, lowering his body temperature
- Position the doghouse so cold winds do not blow inside. South facing is best for most locations. Or put a flap over the door
- Choose a sunny location. Under a deciduous tree is one of the best places. In winter the bare branches will allow sunlight to warm the doghouse, while leaves will shade the area during summer
- Fill your dog's bowl with fresh, room-temperature water several times a day. Very cold water will lower your dog's body temperature and make him more prone to hypothermia. Make sure your dog's water doesn't freeze. He can get dehydrated when the weather is cold just as he can when it's hot outside
