How to Winterize a Dog House:

When the weather becomes colder or inclement weather increases, which can be as early as September depending on what part of the country you reside in, do not forget your dogs when you winterize, especially if your dog spend time indoors in the evenings or at night. It is a common misconception that dogs won't freeze and that nature made them better able to handle extreme weather conditions because their coats become heavier, etc. during the winter. Here are some tips for ensuring that your dog house is warm and that your pet will be protected.- Where you place your portable dog house can make the difference in how cold it gets inside. You want to make sure that the opening or doorway to your dog house is facing the south or west (preferably the south), as the coldest air and wind typically comes in from the north and northeast during the winter.
- Also consider attaching a thick rubber flap to the top of the doorway on your doghouse and that hangs close to the bottom so your dog can go in and out easily and to help protect them from the cold winter winds or conditions like snow or sleet that could blow into the structure.
- Check every few days to make sure the bedding in your doghouse is clean and dry. You want to use wood shavings, straw and hay for bedding.
- According to the Salem Animal Rescue League, you should avoid using old blankets, rugs, or newspapers for bedding in your doghouse as these items pack down easily, becoming less comfortable for your dog and therefore providing less warmth.
- If you have a wooden garage or outdoor shed, you might consider having a doggie door installed so that your dog can go into the garage at night to keep warm and sleep. You could close off a small area so that when if your dog went inside they would be contained to a specific area and be unable to wander all over the place.
- Make sure your dog house is as airtight as you can make it on the outside to keep cold air and wind drafts from getting inside where your dog will be sleeping. You can purchase liquid sealants to paint on the outside of your dog house with a paintbrush or roller.
- You can even purchase standard roof tiles, which come in a variety of colors, and nail them onto the outside of your dog house and on the roof, or measure your dog house for siding. Both roof tiles and siding will help insulate your dog house as well as helping keep out cold air and inclement weather.
- Make sure that the interior space in your dog house is the right size, since according to the Salem Animal Rescue Foundation; the size of your dog house should allow your dog to sit completely up and to stretch out when lying down.
Tips & Warnings:

- If you put roof tiles on the roof of your dog house, remember to over lap the tiles about two to three inches before nailing them down. The same rule applies for putting tiles on the outside walls, or you can put them end to end on the walls and then put caulking along the adjoining edge to seal them. According to the Salem Animal Rescue League, there should be enough interior space in your dog house for your pet to sit up completely and to stretch out all the way to sleep. Of course, you could also consider letting your dogs indoors at night and confining them to a kitchen, enclosed porch or basement and then putting them back outdoors during the day and evening.
- Too much interior space in a dog house can cause your pet to lose its body heat and too little space to allow for easy movement could

06-27-2011- Other Thoughts: Although the first one arrived with a dented roof (the replacement and return was very quick and painless) overall I'm quite pleased with this. I'm not in a high wind prone area so I actually just have it sitting on top of six spaced bricks to elevate it off the ground. My cowardly wheaten terrier still isn't convinced it's not a trap of some kind apparently, but I'm content to let him get used to it first before I escalate measures to get him comfortable in there. He'a an indoor dog at night but can spend hours have the run of the yard. This seems like a good marriage of material and function. I'm pretty sure the dent occurred during shipping as we had a lot of heat for those few weeks. It likely wouldn't have affected the performance, but it was certainly noticeable enough (six inches round and 1-1 1/2 inches deep). Overall I'd recommend to a friend easily enough. The return and replacement will be addressed in the shipping ratings which are separate and the house itself it certainly as advertised and looks like it will last a long time out there.

06-21-2011- Other Thoughts: This is a great product. Its durable, and easy to clean. We use it to store the dogs toys, our dog would rather sit in the rain then seek shelter. Easy to assemble and light enough to move around as needed.

06-06-2011- Other Thoughts: I am the proud mom of a 10 month old, 120 lb rottweiler husky mix. This giant puppy chews up everything, the world is his toy. This house has not been a target of his slobbery jaws. It's well built, tough, and looks good. I use a large industrial rubber mat as bedding. (he shreds blankets) He took to it well, and sleeps in it every night. I highly recommend this house.

05-30-2011- Other Thoughts: The dog house is easy to construct, but it is a little flimsy. We had a windstorm, and the dog house was blown across the yard and fell apart. It also doesn't provide very much insulation to keep our dog warm/cool from the weather.

05-23-2011- Other Thoughts: This is a pretty good dog house for middle size dogs. I have a rottweiler and she can easily dismantle it when she is bored. It has no insulation properties so do not depend on it in the cold. If your dog is under 60 lbs its a good buy. Otherwise, go with something a bit more sturdy.

05-02-2011- Other Thoughts: I have an older dog, so didn't want to spend a ton of money for something, not knowing how long it would be used (sadly), despite the other reviews, I wanted to find out myself. It was very simple to put together, I did not find it flimsy, maybe if all the tabs aren't locked into place. Someone said theirs blew away in a wind storm, but it IS recommened to be fastened down, which I did, made a frame of wood and fastened it to it, seems to be very sturdy. I cut a scrap piece of carpet to fit and my dog is now in HEAVEN! Yes it isn't insulated, but think that can be easily remedied by anyone who is a little bit handy. I think what I like the best is not having to paint it, wash it down and be done with it! It is also a very cute house.

04-25-2011- Other Thoughts: This dog house was very easy to put together just make sure you read and follow the directions it snaps into place but you have to have it lined up right before snapping in each piece but very light and cute and the letters come with it so you can add a name to the front and it comes with clear doors that you can put on and take off easy I left them off but will put them on in colder weather all in all a great product for the amount you spend

04-18-2011- Other Thoughts: This dog house was really a pretty good deal for the money. Its nice looking and easy to put together. After researching other dog houses i thought this one was no better or worse. If you dont want a wood dog house, then you will get a plastic one that looks nice, but isnt quite as sturdy as wood. It went to gether in 5 minutes. It has a nice solid roof. The floor is very thin and cheap, but that is what most of the plastic low end ones are.
