Muzzle
- A muzzle is a device that is placed over the snout of an animal to keep it from biting or otherwise opening its mouth.
- An Elizabethan collar is a cone-shaped device placed around an animal's neck to prevent biting and sometimes referred to as a muzzle, though its function is more usually to prevent the animal interfering with dressings or medication applied on its body.
- Muzzles can be primarily solid, with air holes to allow the animal to breathe, or formed from a set of straps that provides better air circulation and allow the animal to drink. Leather, wire, plastic, and nylon are common materials for muzzles. The shape and construction of the muzzle might differ depending on whether the intent is to prevent an animal from biting or from eating, for example.
Dog muzzles

- Muzzles are sometimes used on untrained dogs, large or small, to prevent either unwanted biting or unwanted barking. They can also be used on aggressive dogs or other animals. They are usually made with a strong buckle or other fastening device to ensure that they do not come off accidentally. Muzzles are also used on dogs when there is a risk of them taking baits that have been laid for vermin.
How to Apply a Dog Muzzle
Muzzles get a bad reputation. Although these devices may resemble archaic forms of physical punishment they are harmless and can be a valuable tool in the training and socialization of a dog who is overly frightened or aggressive. When used properly, a muzzle can prevent injury to your dog or others and keeps your dog from acting out in emergencies or unfamiliar situations. Once your dog is acclimated to the muzzle, putting it on takes only seconds.
Instructions- Place a treat at the bottom of your muzzle, so that the dog must stick his nose into the muzzle to get the treat.
- Reward your dog every time she shows interest in the muzzle.
- Place the muzzle over your dog's snout.
- Fasten the cheek straps of the muzzle, if applicable. Some muzzles have an additional strap behind the dog's head. Fasten this strap as well.
- Have your dog wear the muzzle for a short period of time. Reward your dog with a treat while she is wearing the muzzle, if the muzzle is a harness style that allows your dog to open her mouth a small bit. If you have a basket muzzle, reward your dog with petting and praise.
- Remove the muzzle from your dog. Repeat this process each day for a longer period of time. Continue praising your dog for wearing a muzzle until she can go an hour or longer without complaint.
- Apply the muzzle as described in steps three and four each time the dog must wear the muzzle.
Reasons to Muzzle Your Dog
- You might find your dog needs a muzzle for several reasons. During a veterinary exam or while being groomed, a muzzle ensures that your dog can't interfere with the procedure or behave aggressively towards the people handling him. Many dogs experience fear at the vet or groomer and in some cases this can lead to aggression, even in dogs that are not normally aggressive. Dogs can use muzzles to prevent them from biting and licking an injured area, as an alternative to the "Elizabethan Collar" commonly supplied by vets. A muzzle can be more comfortable and will be less in the way than the traditional collar.
- A dog sometimes requires a muzzle when she eats or chews inappropriate items, such as rocks, sticks or feces. Some trainers use muzzles during training exercises for police and protection dogs. Finally, dogs that are aggressive may need a muzzle when out on a walk or at the dog park to prevent them from harming other dogs or people. Determining the situations in which your dog needs a muzzle for is the first step of choosing the correct muzzle for your dog.
Types of Muzzles
- When you have a good idea of the situations where your dog needs a muzzle, think about whether your dog will be supervised or unsupervised while wearing the muzzle. There are two basic types of muzzles: occlusion muzzles, which hold the dog's mouth closed; and basket muzzles, which allow the dog to pant, breathe, and open her mouth freely.
Occlusion Muzzles
- Occlusion muzzles are the soft nylon muzzles you will often see used at vets or groomers. They should never be used for long periods. Because occlusion muzzles don't allow the dog to open his mouth, he can't pant or drink. If left unattended, a dog wearing an occlusion muzzle can overheat or even die. These muzzles are great for keeping in the car or an emergency kit, but someone should always be with a dog to free her if she shows signs of dehydration or distress.
Basket Muzzles
- Several different types of basket muzzles are available, depending on the dog, the situation and the amount of money you want to spend. Leather basket muzzles, also called police-style training muzzles, are very expensive but are strong and safe enough to allow muzzle fighting during training of police and protection dogs. The thick leather weave lets the dog pant and breathe, but prevents her from biting you or other dogs.

05-05-2011- Other Thoughts: This product probably would've worked great if only I had bought a size smaller. The adjustable strap fit great when I made it the smallest it could be but the mouth part was way too big for the chihuahuas nose. She's a plump chihuahua but still has a tiny mouth!Other than that it's still a good product if you get the size right.
