How to Use a Disposable Diaper for a Dog in Heat
A female dog that isn't spayed will experience a menstrual cycle equivalent to what female humans experience. This means that female dogs will ovulate, making them capable of getting pregnant. Female dogs also will experience bleeding, which can be quite messy, and is especially inconvenient for you if you dog is an indoor dog. Don't worry, though, you can use disposable diapers, with a minor alteration, to protect your furniture and carpet when you have a dog in heat.
- Weigh the dog in heat as best you can. You only need a rough estimate of how much the dog weighs. You might have to stand larger dogs up on the scale while you hold them to get an estimate of their weight.
- Purchase disposable baby diapers. Purchase the size that is recommended for the weight of your dog. A little bit of trial and error will be required in finding the right fit in diapers for your dog, but weight should be the primary indicator. You are better off purchasing diapers a little bit on the big side than diapers that are too small. Diapers that are too big can be wrapped extra tight to make them work.
- Take a disposable diaper out of the package and cut a hole in the center of back side of the diaper for the dog's tail. Pull out all of the tabs that are used to fasten the diaper. It is easier to do this before putting the diaper on the dog.
- Thread the dogs tail through the hole that you just cut in the disposable diaper. Bring the front of the diaper around under the dog. Bring the tabs on the part of the diaper that is on top of the dog around to the part of the diaper that is under the dog and fasten them to hold the diaper in place.
- Change the diaper every couple of hours, or as needed.
How to Tell If Your Dog Can Use Doggie Diapers?

Doggie diapers are reusable or disposable diapers for incontinent dogs. They are used on older dogs, puppies, and female dogs in "season."
- Try out the diapers to see if your dog likes them. The dog might be a little shy at first, or not, if the animal is fully incontinent.
- Get used to a little bit of staring. The doggie diapers will make your dog look like it's wearing underwear.
- Don't use doggie diapers on dogs without urinary flow problems. They are not a replacement for proper care. A dog without incontinence would find the diapers uncomfortable and annoying. They are a "worst case" solution.
- Keep an eye on the diaper. Change it often. If your dog is incontinent at home, a in-home doggie bathroom might be a better solution

02-02-2011- Other Thoughts: I was surprised how well they hold the liquid and not only do they not leak, but they also pull the liquid away from her and keep her fur dry. Highly recommended.

01-08-2012- Other Thoughts: Can't believe these actually work! Thought they would not be absorbent enough for our old dogs who have trouble "holding it" these days - but it's a great solution!
