How to Evaluate Dog Carriers?

- A dog carrier, also known as a crate or cage, provides a safe and secure place for your dog while traveling or to keep your dog in while you are not home. Whatever your need for a dog carrier is, there are many factors to consider when purchasing a dog carrier or crate. Dog carriers can be expensive, depending on the size as well as the material they are made from, so you don't want to purchase the wrong one. You know your dog's temperament the best so keep that in mind while evaluating a carrier
Instructions
- Examine the material the carrier is made of. Carriers come in plastic, wire mesh, metal and soft cloth. If your dog is a chewer, you may be more inclined to purchase a carrier that is made of metal or plastic rather than soft cloth or mesh. If your dog handles situations better when it cannot see its surroundings, a solid plastic carrier or a solid cloth material may work best. Plastic and metal carriers are easier to clean because you can just wipe them down. A carrier made of fabric may need to be washed with soap or rinsed off with a hose if it is soiled
- Consider the size of your dog. Carriers come in all different shapes and sizes. If you have a Great Dane, it would not be comfortable in a crate made to fit a Golden Retriever. Most carriers, if purchased new, will list the height and weight of the dog that would be appropriate for the carrier. Carriers can also be too big for a dog; a Chihuahua may not be happy in a carrier designed for a Labrador. It is usually recommended that the carrier be big enough that the dog will have enough space to stand up straight and to be able to turn around without difficulty
- Decide what the carrier will be used for most. If you will be bringing the dog places with you, a lightweight carrier is best. If the carrier will be set up at home and never moved, you may like a more heavy-duty carrier. If the carrier is going to be used while flying, you may need to use a solid plastic crate with a wire door, depending on the airline's regulations. If you have a small dog, you may want a carrier that looks more like a handbag so you can bring your dog places with you
How to Get a Dog Into a Pet Carrier?

- Sometimes you encounter a dog that just wants nothing to do with getting into a pet carrier. He will fight you tooth and nail if you try to put him in. There are two approaches you can take to the problem depending on if you need to get the dog into the carrier now or if you are planning ahead for future needs
- Instructions
Put the Cat In
- Turn the pet carrier on its end with the open door on the top
- Pick the cat up holding her upper body with your hands just below her front legs. Her back legs should be hanging down
- Place the cat into the carrier back legs first
- Quickly close the door so he doesn't jump back out
Train The Dog
- Place the dog's favorite treats close to the carrier but not inside. Let her get comfortable going close to the pet carrier for a few days. The door should always be left open
- Toss a treat into the carrier while the dog is watching. Say "inside" when you toss the treat in. Continue doing this until the dog is comfortable going into the carrier to retrieve the treat. Let him leave as soon as he wants to after getting the treat. Do not close the door
- Shut the door with the dog inside for only a couple of seconds after she has gotten comfortable going in and out of the carrier with the door open.
- Extend the amount of time that you keep the door closed with the dog inside until eventually he accepts it and goes in on his own
Tips & Warnings
- Put a small blanket or a towel inside the carrier so the dog is more comfortable

12-10-2011- Other Thoughts: I bought two of these. Thought these are Dog Carrier Bags, they are still suitable for cat. One for each cat. The largest cat (10lbs) had plenty of room. I have used these for trips to the vet and I also put them on a plane - one under each seat in-cabin. They fit perfectly on my plane (the size plane with three seats on one side and two on the other) so a mid-sized plane. I put a small towel over the tops of each to cover the little windows at the side. I felt like the cats would feel more secure if they could see less. I think it helped. I would definitely recommend these.

11-08-2011- Other Thoughts: Received the Dog Carrier Bag long before I expected it. My dog has quickly adapted and goes in to get away from it all. Haven't taken flight yet, but it works beautifully for trips in the car. Highly recommend.
