How to Wear a Sleeveless Dress?
A sleeveless dress keeps your shoulders and arms free from any sleeves or straps, and is perennially in style. This type of dress is held up by elastic or a tie in the front or back of the dress. You can wear a sleeveless dress to many places to keep yourself cool, or to avoid tan marks on your shoulders and arms.- Put on a strapless bra to provide support for your chest.
- Hold the elastic part of the dress in both your hands to make an opening for you to step into the dress.
- Step into the center of the dress and pull the elastic part up.
- Pull the elastic top part of the dress up to the top of your chest and underneath your arms.
- Tie a scarf around the dress on your waist to create a decorative element. If you do not have a scarf, you can tie a ribbon, fasten a belt or tie a decorative rope around the dress at your waist.
- Cover your arms with a shawl or a jacket if you get cold.
How to Make Girls' Dresses?
- Determine how long you want your girl's dress to be. If you are using a pillowcase, the existing hem can be used as the dress hem. Allow approximately 4 inches for a deep hem if working with fabric yardage. The top of the dress should sit just below the collarbone; however, allow a 1 1/2-inch allowance for the casing at the top.
- Cut the top seamed end off of your pillowcase at the desired length; remember to leave a 1 1/2-inch allowance for the casing at the top.
- With your pillowcase lying flat on the table, cut armhole curves into the fabric using a shirt or dress your child already owns as a guide. The armholes should be cut at the top corners of the pillowcase in a J shape, coming down approximately 3 to 4 inches from the top of the cut fabric, so that when you open up the pillowcase and look at it from the sides, your armholes will form two U shapes at the top.
- Stitch bias binding to the armholes from top front to top back, right sides together. Fold over and press, then topstitch, finishing the armholes with the bias binding.
- Press the top edge under 1/4 inch, then 1 1/4 inch on the front of the pillowcase dress. Topstitch into place 1/8 inch from the casing edge. Repeat for the back of your girl's dress.
- Thread the ribbon through the casings, front and back. Tie at each shoulder. You may want to tack the bows into place with a needle and thread to make them more secure.
Washing Instructions for Handmade Cotton Dresses
Hours of time go into hand sewing a cotton dress. It is worthwhile to spend some time washing it. Cotton is a sturdy fabric and can be washed in the washing machine, but the delicate threads used in embroidery and lace can be broken or crushed with rough handling. Dirt and other chemicals can build up and wear out the fibers if a garment is not washed and rinsed carefully. Proper care will preserve a garment for many generations.- Mix 2 tbsp. of quilt soap into a sink full of warm water. Submerge the dress and allow it to soak for 10 minutes.
- Gently squeeze the suds through the garment a few times. Do not twist of wring the garment; that can cause fibers to break.
- Rinse the dress in cool clear water and gently squeeze out the excess water. Rinse the garment in new water until no suds remain in the water after you remove the dress. Gently squeeze the dress until it is no longer dripping.
- Spread out a large fluffy towel. Lay the dress out flat on the towel and roll the dress and the towel up together. Squeeze the towel roll gently.
- Lay the dress flat on a rack to dry. Iron the dress while it is still slightly damp.
- Iron the dress with the iron on the "cotton" setting. Use a pressing cloth with fine or shiny fabrics, such as organdy or chintz. Do not iron directly over lace or embroidery. Ironing raised trim will flatten it.
