How to Wash a Moldy Camera Bag:

Improperly stored items such as bags and clothing are at risk for mold growth. Camera bags are an ideal place for mold to grow because they often contain small compartments. If a wet camera bag is improperly stored, mold will grow in the small crevices and work its way around the bag. There are a few tricks to eliminating mold in and on a camera bag. In order to get rid of it, you must thoroughly clean and wash the inside and outside of the bag, even when the mold only appears to be on part of the bag

Instructions

• Take the camera bag outside
• Unzip all compartments of the bag, turn upside down and shake
• Brush off the mold. Clean off the outside of the bag as well as the inside of the bag with the brush. While the brush will not get rid of mold that is in the fibers of the bag, it does loosen and get rid of surface mold
• Apply a small amount of liquid dish soap to a rag and thoroughly wash the inside and outside of the bag. Scrub the bag to get down into the fibers of the material. Do not over-saturate the material with water. Certain camera bags contain soft material linings that become damaged if they are exposed to too much water
• Rinse the bag. Take a clean, damp cloth and wipe off the bag to eliminate any soap
• Sun-dry the bag. Ensure that all of the compartments are open and lay it in the sun until the bag is thoroughly dry

Photographers who live in damp and humid regions have good cause for storing their camera equipment carefully. Instructions

• Seal the container and store it in a cool, dry location
• Prevent condensation on a camera if you take it outside in cold temperatures. Place the camera in the plastic bag and seal the bag before you bring the camera back into a warm environment. Keep it in the plastic bag until the camera reaches room temperature. This will keep condensation from forming inside the delicate mechanisms of the camera
• Change the silica gel packets every few months to ensure that the silica gel continues to absorb excess moisture in the container
