How Does Epilation Work?
Epilation is the active removal of the entire hair by the root or destruction of the hair at the root and is accomplished by many methods. One of the oldest and most common methods is waxing. Warm, fluid wax is spread with a spatula onto the skin in a thin layer in the direction of the hair growth. A piece of muslin is pressed into the wax, and the muslin and wax are then pulled off in the opposite direction of hair growth, with the hairs embedded in the wax.
Electrolysis- Electrolysis is an older form of epilation in which an extremely fine metal probe is inserted into the follicle and used to deliver electricity, causing heat damage to the root area of the hair and stunting or preventing its regrowth. Electrolysis requires multiple courses of treatment. If the metal probe is inserted incorrectly it can puncture the skin and lead to scarring.
Laser Hair Removal
- A modern form of hair removal, intense pulsed light lasers are drawn across the skin where hair is to be removed, and the laser pulse incinerates the root in the hair follicle that impairs its future growth. For permanent results the laser must kill the root during a certain point in its growth cycle, so several laser treatments are typically required for permanent results. While the results can be permanent, this is one of the most costly methods of epilation.
Sugaring and Threading
- Sugaring and threading are two of the most ancient forms of hair removal. With sugaring, a mix of sugar, honey, molasses and/or lemon juice are mixed and cooked to a heavy gelatinous state, then cooled and applied to the skin at room temperature and pulled off with the hair in it. As with waxing, muslin or other fabric strips may also be used to remove the sugar mix. Threading is accomplished with a thin cotton string twisted and looped around several fingers on each hand and drawn across the hairy surface of the skin in an oscillating motion that allows the hairs to be drawn between the threads and pulled out by the root as the twisted thread is moved.
Tweezers and Other Devices
- Hand held tweezers and mechanical epilation devices both pull out hair by the root. Epilators are essentially multiple tweezer heads housed in a handheld device, driven by a small electric motor, that automatically tweezes out multiple hairs at a time as the device is drawn across the surface of the skin. Eplilation devices are most commonly used over large areas such as legs or arms when manual tweezing would be impractical.

05-09-2011- Other Thoughts: I've used epilators for hair removal for a long time. It's much less irritating than shaving with a blade or using depilatories. It's far less painful than waxing!

05-04-2011- Other Thoughts: I like this product a lot! it definately plucks your hairs out but it doesnt take a while. yuo have to keep on goign in circles until all the hairs are finally out. it will probably take an hour to do both legs. but the hairs grow back slowly and thin so i really like this!

05-16-2011- Other Thoughts: I had a it for many years and loved it. It broke and I began researching getting another one. I decided on the AP-98R OptiMax because of its size and it also has the dule opposing heads eventhough it is small. I also wanted one with a cord and liked where the cord plugs into this model. This model can be charged and used with out the cord but so far I have used it with the cord. I am happy with it.

04-23-2011- Other Thoughts: This model is the only one I've owned, so I can't compare it, but as long as the hair is long enough for it to grab, it does the job. Pain is middling, not too bad. I've had it for a couple years now and though I don't use it that often- really just during the summer- it has held up well and works as new.
