Types of Dresses for Ladies:
Those familiar stick figures adorning public restrooms are perhaps one of the best affirmations that the dress is truly a feminine icon. There she stands with her triangle dress designating the way to the ladies' room. Ever wonder what a fashion designer might do to that triangular icon representing the dress? Take a look at all the types of dresses available today, and you may keep wondering.
The Shirt Dress- The shirt dress has a button-down bodice and features a shirt collar and sleeves. The bodice attaches to the skirt and often includes a self-belt or some way to separate the bodice from the skirt. In the 1950s, shirt dresses were quite popular and featured full knee-length or slightly below-the-knee-length skirts. Today's shirt dresses are similar (minus the crinoline) and are ideal for career wear or church attire. Wear pearls or a scarf with a shirt dress to emphasize its classic appeal.
The Sheath Dress
- The simple sheath dress is usually sleeveless or strapless. It's form-fitting and usually falls just above the knee. One of the most versatile of dresses, the sheath is ideal for both daytime and evening events. Audrey Hepburn wore a black sheath dress in the film "Breakfast at Tiffany's," adding even more to the sheath's popularity. Want proof? Vintage clothing experts at Vintage Textile say that Audrey's sheath sold for $800,000 at a recent auction. To get Audrey's look, add oversized pearls and elbow-length gloves.
The Sundress
- Little girls are adorable in their playtime sundresses, but come summer, grown-up girls like to wear these, too. Sundresses usually come in summer-weight cotton, bright colors and floral patterns. Thin, spaghetti-style straps or halter tops are common identifiers. Wear your sundress downtown for lunch and shopping, then to the beach. Keep accessories minimal to emphasize the playful and carefree nature of the sundress.
The Wrap Dress
- The wrap dress flatters virtually every figure. Similar to the shirt dress, the wrap dress has a skirt attached to a wrap-style top. The wrap is usually an attached sash extending from the inside of the dress. Pull the sash through a hole in the side of the dress, wrap around your waist like a belt, and tie toward the center of your torso or your side. The result is an elegant, figure-flattering bodice with a sash that minimizes the size of your waist. Mock wrap dresses are quite popular in matte jersey and look great at the office.
The Maxi Dress
- The maxi dress made its debut in the late 1960s with its heyday in the 1970s. The top usually resembles a sundress with spaghetti straps or a halter top. Often, maxi dresses gather just below the bust and then sweep to the floor. The length of the maxi dress is its hallmark. Many maxi dresses also feature ruffles at the bottom for a true 1970s look. Maxi dresses are more casual and look great for everyday wear.
How to Choose a Dress for Body Type:
Everyone has things that they don't like about their body. When shopping for a new dress, keep in mind that the right dress can hide flaws. Keep your particular body type in mind when shopping. You can accentuate the positive and downplay the areas that you don't like. Whatever type of body you have, you can find a flattering dress to fit your shape.- Choose a dress that skims over the lower half of your body, if you are pear-shaped. You can also go with dresses that have an all over print. This is good for balancing out your figure. Make sure that the dress isn't too short, about an inch or two above the knee. Try to find a dress with an A-line skirt. You can also choose a dress with a low cut or embellished neckline. This will draw attention up and away from your lower half.
- Go for trendy looks if you are petite. Empire waists will elongate your figure. Avoid dresses that are too poofy or girlish, they can make you look too young.
- Avoid layers to try to cover up a plus-sized figure. Baggy dresses will actually make you look bigger. Choose a fabric that drapes on your body but that does not cling. A wrap dress is very flattering on a fuller figure.
- Choose a longer dress if you are not comfortable showing off your legs. Find a dress with a skirt that hits midcalf or longer.
- Look for a dress with details on the bottom if you have wider shoulders. A dress that has beading on the skirt or a colorblock hem is a good choice. A rounded neckline will also make your shoulders look more narrow. Avoid puffy sleeves, they will make your shoulder look even wider.
- Hide a thick waist by changing or eliminating the waistline. Find a dress that has a waist line higher or lower than your natural waist. Elongate your torso by choosing an empire or drop waist dress. A deep V neck will serve to draw attention up and away from your waist.
- Balance a top-heavy figure by choosing a dress with a plunging neck line. A full skirt can also help to balance out a larger bust line. Dresses with halter tops are also a good choice. A dress with an A-line skirt that hits about an inch about your knee will help to balance out a larger chest.
- Look for a dress with fullness or embellishment on top if you have small breats. Choose dresses with a scoop neck. Accessorize with a layered necklace to add dimension to your bust. Avoid plunging necklines.
- Choose bold colors and patterns if you are very thin. Find a dress with full sleeves and ruching in the waist. Use a cardigan or fitted blazer to add bulk. Try long, flowing dresses if you have very thing legs. Use a wide belt at your waist to give your waist some definition.

03-16-2010- Other Thoughts: My daughter got this dress for homecoming and loved it. It was made well and true to size. She is tall 5'10 so it seemed a bit short but manageable.

01-07-2010- Other Thoughts: I ordered this a small size dress with pink color for my daughter. It is a beautiful dress and exactly shown on the picture. I especially like the shoulder strap. However, the size is too small for her, she felt very disappointed. I have to return it and have no time to reorder.

05-20-2010- Other Thoughts: I ordered this dress for my senior prom. Im 5'5 120lbs 34c, I ordered the small and it was way to big. I had to have it taken in about an 1.5 inches on each side, the strap shortened, and about 6 inches taken off the bottom. I should have gone with an xsmall. But I had the alterations done and it fit wonderful after that. I had so many compliments on the dress style. All in all beautiful dress, great price.
