Formal evening wear means something different to everyone. Fortunately, there are social and cultural cues that you can use to determine exactly what should be worn to various events in various areas of the country. As a hard and fast rule, however, you want to be sure that you're dressed appropriately for a night on the town. You should incorporate a coat, tie and slacks for men and a well-fitted dress that hits your knees or lower for women.Function:

Because the word "formal" is usually associated with little black dresses and black-colored tuxedos, darker, more rich colors tend to dominate formal evening wear, though this doesn't have to be the case. Many guests try to incorporate a seasonal or festive color into their formal ensemble. This means wearing jewel colors during the holidays, pastel colors at weddings and whites, blues, reds and oranges to events located near the beach or on a yacht.

- Though there is no hard and fast definition, take dressing cues from the event's geographic region and fashion trends. In Los Angeles, the style is more relaxed, and men almost never wear tuxedos outside of awards shows or extremely posh galas. In the South, the beauty pageant circuit is huge, so formal evening wear is seen much more often and usually contains beading and bright colors that you wouldn't necessarily see on a woman attending a fancy dinner in New York. Be sure to do your homework before you decide upon a specific style of formal evening wear.

- Determining what type of formal evening wear is required is half the battle when it comes to choosing the proper attire. There is semi-formal evening wear, which means that dresses can be ankle-length or knee-length and men can wear coats and trousers but don't need tuxedos; black-tie, which means women wear long cocktail dresses or evening-appropriate separate pieces and men wear tuxedos; white-tie, which means women wear long evening dresses or gowns and men wear tuxedos with white ties and vests. There are many different types of events that call for some level of "formal wear." School dances, such as prom, homecoming and winter formal, require formal evening wear, as can weddings, rehearsal dinners, galas, fundraisers, operas, beauty pageants, awards shows, banquets, débutante balls, garden parties and some holiday festivities. Invitations that specify cocktail attire, informal, dressy casual or creative black tie usually afford you more flexibility and do not call for formal evening attire.

09-07-2011- Other Thoughts: The Affordable Evening Dress is made to a high standard and to be honest the picture shown does not do it justice. I ordered the dress and it arrived within 5 days, even though is came from Shanghai! <br/>Its a lovely floaty dress that falls beautifully and it made me feel like a princess, worth every penny. I ordered a size 10 which was fine but had to have it taken up slightly by a dress maker to avoid tripping on it. <br/>Definitely a special occasion dress or even or wedding dress. <br/>Those that buy will not be disappointed!

09-04-2011- Other Thoughts: I ordered the Vintage Evening Dress(I used my finances account) just because I liked the way it looked and thought it will be suitable for the occasion. I was looking for the dress that would be simple and had the wow factor. My measurements did not matched sizes available and I was offered to have it custom made. I did agreed to pay a bit extra and just go with it. Thats how much I liked the picture of the dress! Well did it not get me worried if I will receive it on time! But to my surprise the dress was delivered in about a week from the measurements given. When I opened the box I was astonished: It looked just amassing and fitted like a glove! I red review left by one of the buyers and I do agree that the picture does not do dress a good justice! Just wanted to say thank you to this Dress site for making such a beautiful dress and I know it will make the occasion very special and not only I but my dress will be admired.
